DirectX 7.0a Problem

I had to reinstall Windows 98 (not a full format and reinstall, just win98).

I downloaded and reinstalled DirectX (v7.0a);it seemed to install normally, but my games, 3DMark, etc. won't run saying my DirectX version is old...version 5 installed. If I view the files, I see a mix of version 5 and version 7 files.

Any ideas??
