I have a **ntl:250** modem, which has both "USB & ETHERNET" on the back, can i use the USB connection for the computer next to it, and use the ETHERNET connection and run a cable upstairs to the other pc?....But can i use both pc`s and use the internet at the same time?

If not, is it possible to do it some other way?....Both pc`s have ethernet built on + i have a spare ETHNET CARD, can this be of use to make it happen, without buying a router?

Thanks very much :)

You can't use both USB and ethernet on your modem but if you have installed the extra ethernet card on your main computer that is presently attached to the modem then you can share that connection with the other computer by "bridging" the two ethernet cards and connecting to the other machine with a cross-over cat5 cable.
If you are presently connected by USB, then you could probably bridge the USB adapter with the currently installed ethernet adapter. This "bridging" stuff assumes that the main computer is running XP.

So im going to need a Cross over cable which ever way, i "bridge" it.
Ive got 10M of standard ethnet cable (thats of no use in this case i take it? So ill either have to buy a 10M length of cross over cable, or a router to use the existing cable? :S

The easy way out is to use a router.

I have an Actiontec 1524 DSL modem. It allows me to use USB and Ethernet at the same time. I don't typically use USB but never had a conflict when it was enabled with all my other systems via Ethernet. Try it - your modem may allow it.

That Actiontec does network address translation but the ntl:250 does not. The "Dual Mode" feature of the ntl:250 refers to broadband cable modes and has nothing to do with the two available ports.
Maybe you can get someone to change the RJ45 plug on one end of that ethernet cable to a cross-over. It might be a dollar for the plug and 5 minutes work, or better yet, just pick up a crossover adapter.

I understand now. Thanks for the clarification.

Actually, no bridging will be necessary. Just make your connection to the modem with the USB cable and enable Internet Connection Sharing on that connection. Use the cross-over cable (or adapter and straight cable) to connect the LAN ports of the two computers and you are in business.
