Hi,
I'm going to install Linux on one of my hard drives so I can use my BIOS options to boot to that drive when I want to.....so my wife won't by mistake...
..I have Kubuntu, Fedora & Mandriva to choose from but it seems like everyone is suggesting Kubuntu....my question is I have a lot of music on a drive that's formated NFTS and a backup of that drive on one that's formated FAT32. Will I be able to access my tunes from Linux???? And while I'm at it what file format is best to use for root, boot & usr when I do install it????
....my system has 2gigs DDR but I was still going to set my swap file to around 2gigs....is that a problem???...
Thanks in advance!!!!! SYSOPT RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Linux, you will need to have SAMBA installed to be able to access the FAT32 partition after you mount the drive. I haven't done this in ages, so I can't help you with the details.

Train ,
He could very well mean Kubuntu . Its a derivative of Ubuntu . I always think of Ubuntu as GNOME and Kubuntu as KDE . The desktops are different but uses the same underlying system and architecture . I believe Kubuntu 's latest release 7.04 is Fiesty Fawn , but I haven't really visited the linux scene in awhile . Perhaps both are Fiesty . What short clips I've seen looks really cool and promising. If I just had more time to go fool with it .

FWIW , you shouldn't have an issue reading any ntfs partition , but if I remember you need to mount it to write to it . I never had an issue playing back my .mp3's if thats wht your wooried about. Besides , either version with install and run from the CD drive , so you can try before you make any final leap .

...thanks Rocket....It is Kbuntu and that was another question...I plan on downloading some tools like mp3 players/rippers...DVD tools and stuff so I needed to know for sure if I should d/l Gnome or KDE tools (I've been doing both in case) which brings me to another question....what is Xbuntu?? and what about Fedora or Mandriva???....ahhhh....the choices....
I'm going to put in the live CD I have of Kubuntu and see what it's like but I also have a drive I already installed Kubuntu on so I could install stuff to make it more usefull....
......darn glad MS isn't the only 64 bit OS out there of life would be BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this is your 1st go at linux , then I would stick with Ubuntu or Kubuntu . They make it easy , if you want to call linux easy . I've tried Fedora and Knoppix , both were ok . Theres a lot to learn and open source programs available , so have fun .
