Hi guys, could use a bit of advice.. First my specs:
FIC VA-503+
Award BIOS JE36
128mg RAM
Viper 770 non ultra
SB live! value

Ran a defrag and went to bed last nite. Woke up, defrag went ok, but no speaker icon in start-up tray. Rebooted, did add hardware, forced the hardware in, re-installed SB drivers ok. Says hardware not found in media player. Still no speaker icon in tray. Moved to another PCI slot twice, checked PNP OS enabled, nothing. Sandra no longer recognizes it either, nor Windows media player(no hardware found). CD spins ok.Turned everything on in "msconfig" start-up.Speakers a-ok. Any ideas on where to start? It just seemed to give up the ghost.. poof!

it looks like your sb live! is dead. try installing it on another pc.
pd: i dont think that movin it to another pci slot may solve anything

Hmm..I got it working for 5 minutes after I disabled both Com ports in CMOS (I have PS/2 mouse). Rebooted and nada again, no speaker icon nor sound controller file in Device Manager. Highly unlikely, but maybe I used up all my IRQ's? Add HW does not detect it again. This is funky, just after a defrag too...

You shouldn't be out of IRQ's, especially when you have disabled the COM ports. You can double check it by right clicking Computer in System Devices to see.

I'm wondering whether when you did the defrag that your MB drivers somehow got out of whack. I would reinstall them.

I just deleted video/sound drivers/etc from device mgr and rebooted and let it re-assign IRQ's.
Seemed to go ok, SB live now works (takes 2 IRQ's!) but Viper 770 AGP refuses to go anywhere beyond 640X480@256! Sliders in properties/settings tab revert back to 256 and 640/480 when applying to desktop or reboot.Detonator driver 2.08 loaded, and in-control tools installed.Hmm....

The SB16 emulator's irq can be manually changed in the device manager. You may have it sharing the wrong irq, I have mine share an irq with my dvd decoder card, my dvd does not use sb16 so it is a perfect choice. Also I hear that if the sblive is in the first pci slot it may conflict with agp. The problem you described has happend to me twice, I don't know how I fixed it. All I did is do the "PNP card shuffle", and it seems to go away. I usaully don't have anything usefull info for this board, so I hope this helps.

Put it back in the slot it was initially in.

The first problem was file corruption. Not hardware. Now you have created a I/O resource conflict by moving it and changing bios resources.

You may need to do a thorough detailed scandisk to find any drive errors. A re-format may also be necessary.

Thanks M1, but I think there is another way to prevent booting to safe mode menu, i.e.
1- normal mode
2- safe mode
3- DOS mode
4- safe mode but step thru autoexec/config.
etc. etc. (something like that)

I could use the bootmenu option in MSDOS.sys of course, but I just know there is an option somewhere, because I did it before... hmm..

FYI-I can't believe I cannot enable my Serial ports because the IRQ's are already in use. Amazing.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Ok, I now see the SB live is sharing IRQ 11 with the VIPER 770 in SANDRA! Looks like I'll
swap slots again, away from the one next to AGP, of course. Too bad you can't re-assign IRQ's on the fly. Also,I forgot where you prevent WIN98 from booting to the safe mode menu.Is that TweakUI? Been awhile... thanks! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey Toad,

If we're talking about the same thing, just edit the msdos.sys file in your root directory. Change "bootmenu=1" to "0". You'll have to get rid of the attributes first. At the c:\ type: attrib msdos.sys -s -h -r. When you're done editing, reinstate the attributes, substituting the minus sign with the plus sign. If you are talking about something else...well, just ignore me.

Toad:
Take a look in TweakUI in the "boot" section. Uncheck "always show boot menu". This is probably the "option" you are referring to.
Too bad about the SBlive problems, especially since you had it all working together before the defrag. If you recall, I gave up on mine some time ago with similiar problems. It would'nt get along with my NIC, and I need that a lot more than the SBlive. Too bad...I had to throw my old SB16 back in, but at least everythings working fine now. 4 speaker sound would have been nice, but I can live with what I've got. Good luck, sorry I can't help you with the conflicts problem!

No problem M1. The Live! is one sweet card, especially when used with MIDI devices, but quite a resource pig. Thanks for the tweakUI tip. I will do that. Tailwinds - Toad
