Just got last night from Office Depot this Maxtor 7200rpm 27.2gb ata66 capable hard drive.. I got 14 days to return it if these "DiamondMax" series are garbage, the box says twin processors, 2mb buffer, <9.0ns access time and a 3 yr warranty. Store price was $199.00.. whats's the vote, I realize it's not a SCSI Barracuda, but I don't game, much, just store lots of scanned photos.. thanks DrVette

Dr. Vette,
The only bad thing I will say about Maxtor has to do with the EZ-Bios drive overlay they reccomend you use to set it up. Please take a little time and search this forum and read about the problems with it and how difficult it can be to remove.
Dave
It's almost as good as a SCSI barracuda performance wise, at least a 7200RPM one.
I would keep it. Do you have it up and working?

i own two maxtor drives and they are just fine. just do not use that ez drive junk...it makes life a pain in the ****...just fdisk and partition as you would normally do and you will be already to go...

I have one of these exact size and model of drives and it works great! I have always had good luck with Maxtor drives. But like others have mentioned throw the EZ-Bios disk away (although the newer one's also have a drive copying program on them.....just dont use the EZ-Bios!)

www.storagereview.com (http://www.storagereview.com) is a good source for info about hard drives.
I have a Maxtor. No probs with it. Speedy little monster, too.

Thanks for the tip on the avoidance of the maxtor bios funk, BBA, I got it running today, the instructions said it won't work with a Win98 that is a upgrade from 3.1, but it works fine as a upgrade from Win95. This thing is so very quiet, but so is my Quantum Bigfoot 8.0 and my IBM 13.5 7200rpm. thanks for the help, DrVette

Only comment I have on Maxtor other than the same EZ Bios recommendation, is that they are of a lower quality than Seagate, Western Digital, IBM, etc. Not that this is bad, it may be that the others are over engineered (and over priced). I do wish Maxtor would consider using a real absolute filter in their drives.
EZ-Bios isn't maxtors funk it is someone elses funk. Cause all the big drives to work on older OS's need something like EZ-Bios or partitions. I personally like Maxtor drives Have had 0 problems with them. The utility that comes with them is very simple to use to format and partition. So imho they are good for the price and performance.
