I have a Compaq AMD 350-128 sdram. I bought a video cam and can't get the USB to work. The only thing in the BIOS to do with USB is USB legacy for keyboard and it is disabled. In the device manage it shows USB Root Hub and VIA VT83C572/VT82C586 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller. It says there are no conflicts and the devices are working properly. I have followed the installation instructions: Installed software-reboot-after reboot plug in the device and load drivers. When I click on the program to run it I get an error (cannot show preview graph). For some reason it tries reading a: drive before opening. I click ok and it goes to the program but no video signal. If I click on anything in the program it locks up. The camera tech support said it would not work because of the VIA chip. Not enough power. The cam requires 200Ma. I tried using a self powered USB hub and the same thing happened. I installed a PCI to USB card and still the same thing. I am running windows 98. I hooked the camera to a friends computor and it worked just fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

How much power does the Compaq give you for this device?

The best I can tell it has a power supply current of 80Ma. I never could get the Compaq tech guy to tell me but after researching for quite some time I found some specs.

Hi there chuck101,
I too had a very similar problem when I installed a USB Zip drive to my PC. The Zip drive would install fine but would lock the whole system when I tryed to copy files!!! I too have the VIA Chipset which was partly the reason for my problem. I would suggest you download the lastest USB filter driver from VIA http://www.viatech.com/drivers/index.htm This driver should allow you to use your video cam fine. If you still have the problem then you may need to flash your EEPROM. As I my case, my EEPROM / BIOS didn't support the latest standards in USB but a quick flash soon brought it back up to standard and now everything is running fine!!! I hope this is of some help to you. Good Luck

I have downloaded the USB filter driver and did the BIOS flash and it still does the same thing. I guess I should try another cam. I still think it has something to do with my computor or the chip. Thanks for the help. Everyone here seems like a nice bunch of people. I am going to try to put together a computor from scratch shortly so I will probably be asking for more advice. Thanks again.
