While fiddling around the other day, I muffed up my HDD controller drivers. (I admit it, I ignored the W98 warning about "This driver incompatible...).
Now I have the little yellow exclamation points saying that my drives are having a compatibility mode paging error that reduces overall system performance. My C, D and E drives are using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system and WIN98 keeps telling me to update my drivers! Also, my CDRom is not being seen at all although my SCSI CD-RW is being recognized just fine...
Well, I have tried many different ways to get back to the old HDD controller drivers but to no avail. From time to time, my HDD light STAYS on??
I have: IntelP3-500, 256MB RAM, using an ABIT BE6 mother board.
WIN98 Resource Manager says I now have the Intel 82371AB/EB/MB PCI BUS Master IDE controller installed with Primary and secondayr IDE controllers (single fifo and dual fifo installed..HELP!!

1-5-00 UPDATE:
I have reflashed my BIOS and performed several other surgical operations on my HDD Controller drivers.

I am still getting the "Using MS-DOS compatibility mode" for some of your drives.
Also, I have seen an error message during prior boot sessions that says my HDD controller is using 32 bit drivers with child devices that can't handle 32 bit drivers so W98 is halting your system.

Does anyone have any ideas how to rid my system of this MSDOS compatibility stuff??

Boot your computer into safe mode, remove HDD controllers, reboot and let Wondoze re-detect them.

Thanks Andy, but that didn't work. Safe mode doesn't allow all functions like deletion or disable.

See Updated info as of 1-5.

Flashing the BIOS has nothing to do with the Bus Mastering drivers. You are going to have to download the drivers from the manufacturers website. If you need more help, let us know what kind of motherboard it is or if it's a brand name computer (and the model #). The more info you can get us, the more we can help.

I have removed both IDE controller while using the standard windows mode, non safe mode. On some machines it works and I am able to reboot, sometimes I hang up. If you do hang up, just pull the plug and reboot, the drivers you had will still be there. Worth a shot

Nathan, Thanks, I am running an ABIT BE6 mobo with the Intel 440BX chipset (82443 BX and 82371EB) I built it myself and haven't had a lick of trouble with "MAX" since day one. I did go to the intel www site and DL'd the latest chipset and installed with no issues. Please email me if you have any further ideas.

I've dealt with MS DOS compatibility mode issues many times and the only thing that ever worked for me was a reinstall of Win 9x...hopefully though, you'll get it fixed before taking that step.

Good luck!

The correct bus master drivers should have come with your MB or you should be able to get them from their websight. Copy the driver install program to a floppy since you won't have access to your cdrom and run install from your floppy drive. Follow the instructions, reboot and you should have your cdrom back and NO Yellow Asterisk.

Did you do a safe mode boot and delete those drivers? Then go into normal mode and reinstall them?

BTW, did you install any other programs before installing those patches?

Let us know what happens.

Go to REGEDIT click OK Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CURRENT CONTROL SET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS
Look for a "NOIDE" entry
If its there delete it and reboot, then windows should reinstall its own drivers.
If its not there I have no idea what to do next.

Nathan, Bluesky's REGEDIT suggestion cleared up my controller issue. Thanks for everyone's suggestions, it was fun trying them out!
