It is my experience that a single-focus programmer makes about 30%-40% less than a "Software Engineer". That is not to say that they are not valuable, its just that most businesses that would hire programmers want them to be able to do multi-language integration.
As an example, I have worked as a "Perl programmer" in the past, but was actually really required to do Perl (including CGI), SQL, Java, Javascript (including AJAX), & PHP... and that was for about $40K anual

In my area (Hampton Roads, Virginia) I interviewed for PHP Developer/Programmer positions that offered anywhere from $45,000 to $85,000
As the other person mentioned most of these positions look for skills above and beyond just PHP - the broaded and more flexible the scope of what you can do the more desirable you are :)
