I have an Abit BE6 motherboard w/ Ultra ATA 66 control built into the board. My HD (WD 20 Gigs), can support ATA 66. I updated my BIOS and made sure all was well before proceeding. I connected the special 80 conductor for the ATA 66 in the proper sequence. Now, my computer boots up and loops . . . it begins to load windows98, then stops, reboots, runs through the normal stuff, goes to load windows98 . . .
Any reason why this is happening and what I can do to correct it? Thanks in advance.

JimG: After you updated your BIOS, did you:

"After the flash update is completed, clear CMOS, reboot your system, then go into the BIOS settings. Once you are in the BIOS settings, please:
1. Load the Setup Default (in addition to settings for HDD, FDD, and Date.... please do not forget to also LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS)
2. Go into CPU Soft MenuTM to adjust your CPU speed and voltage
3. Save and Exit"

You might want to try removing all PCI cards and booting again. It sounds like you are running into resource problems you didn't know you had because you never used the ATA66 controller before. Removing the other cards will help find this out or not.

Sorry . .. . been working all day . . . gotta earn money.
After I get done checking email and the like on a working computer, I will be attempting to rectify the problems with mine. Thanks again for the advice

Do you have the latest windoes 98 drivers for your ultra 66 installed. You might want to go to www.highpoint-tech.com (http://www.highpoint-tech.com) to make sure that you do. If not I happen to have the latest Beta drivers from highpoint (I think I do at least) They sent them to me last week. It sounds like you may not have the best drivers.

And be happy you are getting that far. My quantum fireball CX wont even get that far. Gives me a "no bootable media" error after verifing the DMI Pool Data. Apperently Abit still is not compatable with all drives, However from my conversations with Highpoint your drive should work with the right drivers.

Also in the HPT Bios, what is the drive set to, try setting the drive to UDMA 3 if it is not set to that already. Also if you have one handy and nothing else works. Try a different cable.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem caused by Mc afee (no re-boots tho) I uninstalled and all was fine. Norton worked OK.

Good luck...
