my windows messenger logs on and off by itself, despite me managing the settings.
I have just upgraded from windows 2000 to xp pro
I tried to install the newest version, it will not allow me as it says I do not have permission, and the admin needs to do it, well, I am logged in as the admin and have all the rights as far as I can see by the settings.
I tried to uninstall, with the same result as above.
any ideas???

Also, does this problem apply to any other programs on your computer? Did you check to see if your account got set to "limited" privileges?

no, only windows messenger, and msn messenger. I can install and uninstall any other program as i have tried it and done it. My admin privelages are admin, I made sure not limited.

The administrator account in safe mode is not limited one bit. Admin "user" accounts are limited to doing major changes and anything with other user accounts with passwords. Or basically, anything that restricts a user admin account the administrator account gets around.
Also, just a thought, did you scan for any spyware/adware or viruses?

I tried in safe mode, I did a virus scan, and spyware scan and cleaning.

*raises white flag* I'd suggest a repair install if none of whatever anyone else says works.

You are using XP Pro so you can right click "My Computer" and select manage
Once the Computer Management screen opens, open local users and groups on the left.
Select Groups on the left and then open Administrators on the right - make sure your account is there. Say OK to close the window after you have figured out how to add yourself.
Scroll through the rest of the groups. Remove your name from the groups if it is in any of the other groups.
Reboot your computer and try to install Live Messenger again.
