Working on my first (and hopefully last!) Compaq Presario problem. I receive the following error during boot:

Error: Unable to detect CD-ROM drive
ATAPI CD_ROM device driver not loaded

As a result, I can not read the restore disk on this PC (CD-ROM driver not loaded), but I did try to look at it on my laptop, and, I can't extract this file from the Restore disk provided by Compaq. File name is cpqide.sys, and it is for a lite-on LTN-301 32X CD-ROM.

I was unsuccessful at finding the driver on Compaq's home page or on Lite-On's home page. DriverGuide.com also is useless on this matter. Any help would be appreciated.

Serge,

Thanks for the help! Tried driverguide last night, and everything kept timing out once you got into the Compaq stuff. I'll keep you posted on how it comes out.

Thanks,

Serge,

I promised I would get back to you. What I've found is that the controller for the CD-Rom is bad. I'm assuming that the controller is an integral part of the motherboard (as are the sound and video @$&%!). I've tested the CD-Rom on one of my systems, and I know that it is good. I also swapped the data cables on the drive with that of the hard drive. The PnP bios detected that the hard drive changed IDE Ports, and I was able to boot from the hard drive, so that tells me that the IDE ports and cables are both good. The only thing left is the mobo. If it weren't so &$%# proprietary, I would tell him to replace the mobo, but I wouldn't even want to hazard a guess at what Compaq would want for a new one! Cheaper to build him a clone system.

Oh well, thanks for the help.
