I have a Compaq 1685 notebook. When the hard drive sits idle, it makes a "click" sound every few seconds or so. This is not disk activity, but rather sounds like the hd is stopping. Compaq has no fix or answers that I know of. They had a similar problem with a Seagate hd a few years ago and put out a "idleoff" softpaq fix. Just wondered if anyone has heard of this problem, any ideas etc.. The hd is a Hitachi 4.3g dk238a-43. Thanks...

Sounds like the hard drive read/write head parks when it's idle. If that's getting noisy, it sounds like you've got some hardware damage inside the drive.

it sounds like the HD might crash in the future.
i suggest getting a new HD and sending the other one back to the manufacture for a replacement
