I've noticed something keeps dumping hash files all over my PC, especially when I go into netscape.
I opened one in notepad and noticed a lot of junk mixed in with references to Certificate Services, Verisign, Public Primary Certificate Authoriy, Thawte Consulting, and RSA Data Security -

So - I'm thinking that it might be an internet certificate setting in netscape somewhere that I need to "adjust" - but I can't find it -

Any ideas? -

Sometimes the file will appear on my desktop with a format like _hash743777.

Here is a reference to hashing..used for encryption..it is usually run as Java..your
certificate settings or Java settings in NS
may have changed

I've come to the conclusion that I really hate netscape!
Their help and faq files don't go anywhere but their pay by incident help line which I don't want.

Anyway - guess I won't be using it going forward if I can help it.

Regardless, something in netscape navigator 4.05 ( which I can find no reference to on their web-site ) is causing _hashXXXXXX files to appear all over my hard drive and desk top - one per use of netscape.

I can find no mention of the word hash as an index item in their help files except as a part of another problem description, none of which match my issue.

I think I've exceeded my frustration tolerance level with this one.....

I've got seti@home running on several different computers and this is the only one where netscape is dumping hash files. I do mostly get the hash files looking up SETI stats through an icon going through netscape to open my stats page.

I HOPE it has nothing to do with the SETI client. I'm still of the mind that it's some sort of certificate setting in netscape on this one box......

Anyone with any far-out ideas on what else I can check - let me know - I'll try them unless they threaten the whole system.
