I am sorta outta touch with older video cards, but here is my dilemma. The girlfriend has an an older pc running WinXP, 750MHz P3, overclocked on a tyan S1854 motherboard, 528megs of ram, 17" monitor, but a crappy diamond S540 3 with 16 megs of ram. She is getting into those big fish games, and they run like ****, and my guess is a better video card would solve a lot of problems
After looking on ebay for an upgrade video card for this machine, the older cards just have no specs with them and trying to search the net for the specs is just as fruitless as they are not sold anymore.
Based on the computer specs above, what would be about 3 or 4 used video cards i should be looking for, hopefully with at least 64megs of ram that would works in this pc or even 128meg video card if they works with the above specs. I am sure someone has a pc with similar specs who could reccomend something compatible.

Thanks for your time

Ebay isn't the bargain it used to be.

Get a new card on newegg.com:

What kind of "big fish" games? A P3 750 can only do so much too, so the graphics card might not be the only problem. Depending on the new card you get you may create a bottleneck.

Agree with rocknroll, depending on the games, that system is sort of low on the horsepower range but a decent vid card came extend it's life for a while longer. That said, I do have a few systems that are that old and still in use. My favorite place to get hardware upgrades from them is the local Goodwill computer store. Great place for some good bargains. Picked up a stick 256 of PC100 for my Grandmothers computer the other day for 9$, new. Got a nice DV cable with gold contacts for 7$ for my monitor. In the video card bin, there are loads of TI4200's for 10$ and Geforce 5200's for 14$. Either would be an upgrade of significant magnitude from the card you have now. The 4200 by the way is a real "hall of famer". I had both the 42 and the 52 when they first came out. The 42 blew the doors off the 52.

yeah i hear you guys, but i am willing to risk 10 or 20 bucks to see if the card makes a difference with the big fish games, if it doesnt work, so what :D

it those hidden object games, they work fine , just a little sluggish, so i figure a newer card might be worth a try

Thanks for the responses

Ebay isn't the bargain it used to be.

Boy - that's an understatement. It's a howl - used to go there, now people are typically buying stuff on EBay for way more than they can get using PriceWatch, TechBargains, or simply using google.

Actually it's not funny - kinda sad to see folks get ripped off like that.....

Totally agree, but you can buy some pretty neat stuff on ebay that you can't find anywhere else. You can pretty much get any computer part under the sun there, weather it's still in production or not.

I get all my new parts from newegg though. Ebay is a horrid place to get new computer parts from.

"Big fish games" isn't enough for anyone here to help you out. What SPECIFIC games are you trying to run?

I would agree with Mobo 57.

TI 4200 was one bad card. That card would hit 14,000 on Mad Onion. Oh dear Im telling my age.

I would think anything stronger might start putting a strain on the CPU.
