Running into a problem with a new system that has a fresh install of WIN98SE on it. All works fine except a modem.

For some reason, no matter what type of modem or what slot they go into, I cannot get a modem to respond under diagnostics. They get detected and installed just fine by WIN, but can't be used.

I have installed a PCI winmodem into several different slots, changed COM ports and also installed an ISA hardware modem with COM port properly installed and get the same message that the computer failed to communicate with them.

There are no conflicts and both modems are known good.

I assumed that it was a problem with WIN, so I reinstalled (although just over itself) - didn't work.

Thanks for any ideas http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I'm thinking you probably have an issue with your PCI bus drivers on your motherboard.

What kind of motherboard do you have?

I think your best bet is to go with a non-win-modem and go with a nice external 56k modem through com2 if it isn't being used by anything else.

Far fewer conflicts, you can reset the modem without rebooting the machine, and you can tell from the LED's what the modem's doing. Can't get that with an internal - especially not a win-modem.

Axel - I think your right, so I have been trying to track it down without success.

The MB is a FIC VB601-V, which is a VIA chipset based Slot 1. I got the latest drivers, too. Reinstalled DUN, set BIOS to non-PNP, etc.

I don't see any problems with the following. IRQ routing is working properly.

IRQ's
4 - COM1
5 - IRQ Holder
6 - Floppy
7 - LPT1
8 - CMOS
9 - PCI to USB
9 - IRQ Holder
9 - Video
9 - IRQ Holder
10 - PCI Modem
10 - IRQ Holder
11 - Sound
11 - IRQ Holder
blah, blah, blah...

Haven't pulled any hair out yet http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

How many COM ports do you have installed? Your modem may want you to have COM3 or 4 in which it may not be installed; usually only COM1 & 2 are installed.. You can add it as new Hardware. When you add one COM port, you will need to reboot and then add the next COM port then install your modem.

Finally got an ISA hardware modem installed properly on the last slot, and have come to the conclusion that the PCI bus (slots) on this board aren't up to snuff.

Thanks, bobcat. I had tried all different ports prior and also disabled any port that would conflict too. A Winmodem will not work on the board no matter what I do. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I'm leaving the ISA modem in for good.

Given the "fun" I've had with the one win modem I'd been "inflicted" with, I'd say you are lucky and better off. There are those who will tell you a cheap win modem is the way to go and never gave them any problems, but their number is few. I ALWAYS recommend a nice external modem .

How fast is your ISA modem?

I'm running that same winmodem now on my MB that has a VIA MVP3 Chipset and it runs just fine.

Seems that other MB just doesn't like it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

They're both 56K
