If replacing the ram/ppga slot converter removed the problem initially, it might be worth re-seating the components one at a time. if reseating the memory removes the problem for a few days, then it comes back, do it again. if this sequence continues you might have a badly seated dimm slot, or a dry joint. if reseating the memory does nothing, try the cpu with the same method of working. do one item at a time though, or you will not narrow down the fauly.
It might have just been coincidence that the problem disappeared, it might be heat(were you running the system without a case after replacing the memory?) if so then more fans might be needed, even though you dont mention overclocking at all, sometiems another fan is required just to keep things a little cooler in there and help the airflow through the case.

Hi Hank
Have u solved your prob yet? I have the same m\board, aopen case, celeron, viper550 and stacks of memory and I get very similar faults. (Although the initial 3 mths the sys was solid as) The system is not overclocked, but the viper heatsink is nearly too hot to touch. (I tried another v550 which was just as hot) I initially thought the black screen at bootup after a crash was a faulty pwr sup (all components are about 6 mth old) or the h/drive loading pwr supply. It came good with a new drive for about a month then it happened again so I tried the usual refitting of components, fan checks, I've flashed the bios as well just in case but it still happens. A crash every now and again would'nt be so bad but when it fails to reset/reboot like the system is dead....
I realise the hot vidcard is a likely culprit but I have a bad feeling its the m/board after reading your problem.
