I had a Cat5 crossover cable made to connect two PC's via NIC cards and could not get a connection. I inspected the cable ends and the crossover end RJ45 connector has two wires crossed, green and blue wires.
I live 50 miles from town and am wondering if it's possible to separate a RJ45 crimp-on connector without destroying it, otherwise I'll have to wait several days to go into town and have a new end installed.
Has anyone had success removing a RJ45 connector?

the green and blue do not make it a crossover. it would be the green and orange pairs.

once you punch the end, you have to cut it off.

I have the color code pattern right in front of me....the guy simply got 2 wires wrong. Have to take it back then.

So I'm guessing he didn't TEST the cable after he made it? I always test the cables after I crimp them.

Make sure you use a cable tester on the new cable. this checks that the correct wires are in place and verifies continuity. you might have the right colors in place, but there might not be a good punch on the RJ45. I'd hate for you to have to drive 100 miles again.

I would cut into the cable about 3 inches from the connector and cross those two wires there, before attempting to remove and reuse the connector.

This is my $5 LAN cable tester, a 2 port surface mount block - plug in both ends and check the connections with any multimeter or continuity tester.

I'd buy a crimper and crimp my own ends. If you calculate drive time * your wage you could have a crimper and bag of cable ends for the cost of the drive.

buy online so you don't have to go anywhere
