Have you tried uninstalling system mechanics to see if that program caused it? It isn't the first time a program caused IE or 95/98 to go belly up.

try and run system file checker by start>programs>system tools>system information and then clicking on the tools menu and going down to system file checker. if it finds bad dll files go to this website to download the bad dlls , if they are not at the website, then go to the second link which is the bbs you can post to asking for the files you need. they are pretty quick about getting back to you i have found

dll archive: http://solo.abac.com/dllarchive/

message board to get dll files you need: http://www.insidetheweb.com/mbs.cgi/mb69210

in system file checker you can opt to just replace one file, so you can go to the archive and see if the file that is giving protection faults is there, download it, and the run the file checker and follow directions.

another thing...look for faultlog.txt using the find option on the start menu. go look at that (if you have it) and it will show you all the protection faults you have had since installing windows. if you do not reinstall windows very often, it might be a good idea to empty it ever so often...

hope this helps!
