There are two systems connected wirelessly to a router.

System1 is a Win98se system with a wireless PCI card and is located in a room about 20 feet down the hall from the room with the wireless router in it. It connects fine and mainatains it's connection.

System2 is a new WinXP system with a wireless USB connection and is located in the same room as the wireless router. It's wireless connection never connects automatically and once it does get connected, after much fiddling around with connection options, it regularily drops the connection.

Could the problems with System2 be related to the USB or ???

I would rather not run wire across the room but the problem is getting very frustrating.

Should we guess what type of hardware you have?

It might be a nut loose between the keyboard and the chair?

Or a driver issue.

Sorry. The problem system is a new Dell and the USB device, (Dell did not offer a wireless PCI card option), and router are Dlink. I've run a cable.

It could be the nut. It's been wound pretty tight since before Xmas.

Search for updated drivers for the wireless USB device.

If you are running the latest drivers, then try going backwards to an older version of the wireless driver. I have seen that work on Dells before at work. You just never know why.

Although not the preferred solution I ran a cat5 cable to the router to alleviate the annoyance while working on a solution. We ran the cable along the edge of the floorboard and since it is the same colour as the rug it doesn't look too bad. They don't seem interested in spending more time on the problem so are using the USB device as a paperweight until further notice. I'll check back here again when/if they decide I should work on it again. Thanks
