Another question regarding a WD hd. The hd is seen in bios, auto config sees all correctly. Post screen shows master and slave too with correct cylinders etc. Jumpers are on (m)&(s). Windows don't show the second hd at all. Working on a home built "95 w/ American Megatrends 727 mobo, 100 pentium. The hd hums louder than any other that I've heard and vibrates slightly, enough when placed free in the case that it buzzes against the metal.. maybe dead hd?

Is this a new drive? What size is it?
You must fdisk and format the drive (I'm sure you know) - I would suggest you do that from a boot disk with your primary drive disconnected and the new target drive set as master (temporarily).
Note that Win95A will not be able to see a FAT32 drive, so if the drive in question is already formatted with FAT32 and your operating system is Win95A - that is likely your problem.
And the drive could be bad...

Duh, I forgot you'all can't see this thing. WD 1.0. I tried this process on both my IBM 475amd, and the home-spun 100-Pentium. Both os's are Win98. The hd in question is outta the garbage, literally, so I didn't care to try to open it, just gonna format and use. Thanks for the tip on format with pri hd disconnected, that'll prevent a big UH-OH. I am impressed with the performance of the latest two P-100's I've worked on, the latest was free cuz the dude had the shop put Win98 on it, then it froze and quit constantly.. "Take this junk" so I did.. stopped up cooling vents on cpu and cpu fan that failed to run on boot MIGHT have been the prob. Running for 24 hrs. no problem, so far. thanks DrVette

I've also tried the deal of using the HD as single to do the (format c:/s) thing but it still is not found.. is it normal to be seen in bios and post but not found when you start windows, or try to format using it as a primary(single)drive? I'm trying to remove the cover off the HD but don't have a Torx size 10 or smaller. thanks DrVette

1. BIOS/Stand CMOS Setup/ anything "NONE" here? change it to "AUTO".
2. Are you sure your motherboard support this size HD? some old board won't recoginize big HD.

With that much vibration in a drive, I wouldn't trust it to hold anything except a door - open that is....
You probably have a good card on the drive, but it sounds like the spindle bearings are shot on it. Best bet is to scrap it for parts and don't try to store anything on it. You might try finding the same drive with a shot board and make a whole of the two parts.

I have the same problem trying to use my old HD used for Win95, as a slave on my new PC running Win 98. The bios sees it correctly, and when I moved it to the second IDE channel, Win 98 saw it and claimed it wasn't configured correctly. Also since a drive letter isn't allocated you can't use format.exe. Trying FDISK to create a DOS partition told me there was no space.
However I think I know the cause of the problem, though I haven't tried it yet. I used to use a facility called EZ, so that Win95 would use all 800Mb of the disk. Now I'm running win98 the EZ software won't have been loaded, so won't be there to interface to the disk. I'm going to try finding the EZ utility on the web, and see if it has an uninstall option.
I'll let you know how I get on, and try the same solution yourself, and see if it helps.
Regards
Kerry
