My laptop says that I am connected, but I just get a blank browser when I try to go to google.com, yahoo.com, etc. I have tried several connections (wireless, wired, connect via my Treo), and several different browsers, but to no avail.

I am presently doing a scan with ad-aware, spybot, and AVAST, but wanted to know if you guys had any other ideas.

try the winsock xp fix.
Antivirus/Antispy (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=161595)

it could be that your hosts file has been modified. check that also.

OK. How would I check to see if the hosts file was modified, and how and what do I put it back to?

If you don't know how to manually modify your hosts file, you can try Hostsman. the link should be on the same thread that I posted earlier.

OK. I'll give it a shot. Just tried the Winsock XP fix. Didn't fix the issue.

did you just try clearing your dns cache? from a command prompt, run ipconfig /flushdns

Any advice on the settings, or do I just run it and it will fix it?

Scanned the host file with hostman. 0 errors.

Tried to flush the dns and got the following message:

"Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution."

Any ideas?

something is messed up with your dns then. did you renew your IP? did you set a static IP and/or DNS? what does your DNS info say when you run ipconfig /all?

Released and renewed the IP. Didn't fix it.

Not sure how to set a static IP or DNS, or what settings I should put (guessing it goes in Internet Options in IE).

I've attached a screenshot of what it says when I do an ipconfig /all (I've deleted the physical address for privacy reasons).

the router has failed to assign an ip for what looks like it might be adaptor #3! anything that starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is not properly configured\connected.

static ips are set in your network card settings.

the 169... is on the wireless, but the wired card has a valid LAN IP.

your dns is pointing back to your router. did you refresh the IP on your router? run tracert to www.google.com and see where it stops.

OK.

It times out right from the get go.

Will try refreshing the IP on the router, but also had the same problem when I hooked up my Treo to my latop and tried to get on with that connection. Same thing happened with the Treo connection as is happening now.

don't just refresh the router WAN IP. release and renew. you should recycle the power on the modem and router. I've had problems where the ISP made some internal DNS changes. recycling the power seemed to do the trick.

Tried that. Didn't work, unfortunately.

you don't have any firewall apps do you?

there is something funky going on with your DNS. if winsock fix didn't correct it, you might need to do a repair install or a system restore to a previous point.

That was it! A corrupt firewall (Sygate)! Thanks, Midknyte!

Which free firewall do you prefer?

Outpost used to be pretty good, but it hasn't been updated in a while. I've been looking at comodo recently.
