Millions and millions of people are booting off SATA hard drives...Can't see why a Sata DVD drive would be any different.

OK from the HDD because all system drivers are loaded :)

what about from CD, no sata driver loaded because no system :)

this has been a problem i am told....that is why i am trying to find
an answer from a user :D

The bios has to detect a sata hard drive before it can load windows :x

The same bios should and will detect a sata dvd drive the same way wouldn't it?

The selection of nice IDE DVD burners is better then the sata selection...

If you're using a SATA adapter card, it may not support optical (CD/DVD) drives. This is a commom problem with storage adapters. Maybe this is what the other users are complaining about.

SATA optical drives are a relatively new development. Perhaps the SATA controllers just can't handle them.

You must also keep in mind that selecting a DVD drive as a boot device in BIOS will not affect a SATA DVD drive that's mounted on a 3rd-party controller. In that case, the motherboard BIOS must be mature enough to see drive "through" the 3rd-party controller and allow you to specifically select that drive.

Because they are?

DVD drives require ATAPI programming model, while HDDs are plain ATA.

Many (early) SATA controllers, their BIOSes and their drivers didn't support ATAPI. It's becoming less and less of a problem as time passes.

I have Plextor 755-SA's on three different systems/mobo's. A Asus A8V Deluxe, a P5W DH Deluxe and a Abit AW9D-Max. Once I figured out the necessary settings in each bios, booting and installing from the SA was no problem at all. I read somewhere that IDE is quickly heading for the exit.
