I understand the be nice to customers as they may not come back but I had had enough today. Mom comes in with three brats tearing about the store, pushing the kiddy version of shopping carts, screaming, grabbing items. After ten minutes of letting my blood pressure rise, I went over to the closest kid, took the cart away from her, told her it is not a toy and I would appreciate her behaving like a lady in my store. Mom was irritated with me but quickly paid and left. What is it with brats ruling their parents these days? I was reading about a family in the southern part of our state who will soon be without a home as they can't control the kids. They even failed after a visit from "The Nanny". Why have children if you lack the skills to instill proper behavior? Children are a privilege not a right.

See, I think what it is is sorta the opposite. I think because these now-parents were hit when they were children, they don't know the proper way to raise a kid. I was never hit, but I never was loud in a public place (never even criend in a public place I'm told unless it was like I got hurt doing something, but that's pain crying of a little kid, not tantrum crying). I always address elders by their title and you sure don't see me walking around in ratty clothes ruining any semblance of respectability left in our society like most kids. Hitting kids has nothing to do with raising them, but some people only know that method, so if they refuse to use it they are left with no method.

I only have to tell my 3 year old that I'll swat her behind if she doesn't behave. She'll listen to me. For some reason she won't listen to her mother.
My daughter's feelings get hurt if I have to swat her. Don't even have to really swat hard.
See spoiling kids works, if they don't listen they get swatted. If they listen they get rewarded.

Wrong. You only think that's the evolution because that's what was being reported to authorities more and more over time. It's the same way with just about everything these days. We THINK it's escalated only because we have the technology to hear about more and more incidents every day.
We've become a soft, touchy-feely, candy-*** society. Children have been raised with the same lenience that my wife gives to our dogs.
"Oh, don't be angry at them! They didn't know any better."
"Yes, I realize they tripped me going down the stairs, but they didn't mean it!"
Funny, they never trip me. If I stop midway up our stairs, the all stop behind me. If I yell, they all stop. If I look at them wrong, they look away.
It's called dominance, and the friggin' dogs get it. Parents have forgotten that their kids are not the alpha person in the house. They want to raise their kids to be successful, so they think that treating them like the alpha-dog will instill this in them.
Instead, it makes them lazy, complacent, obnoxious, idiots. For proof, take a look around at kids today and then look at the way kids acted 50 years ago.

Uhhh, I wasn't exactly a child abuser but when I said jump the kids jumped.
If they didn't jump, they would be jumping up and down holding their ares.
When they did as they were supposed to do, they got rewarded. When they didn't behave they had best have hoped Mom didn't have to come to me with it. When Mom came to me, it was a for sure fact that the kid had disrespected their mother and more impotantly, my wife.
The kids may get away with giving their Mom some carp, but they did not give my wife carp. When my wife said "so and so did this or that" it was her way of telling me she couldn't handle it. My wife was a tiny little thing. 5' nothing and 100 lbs.
Yep, it was time for some red ares. ;)

Yes, a good way to raise children is like dogs using Pavlovian theory. Rather than teach them right from wrong so they can reason for themselves in situations which they haven't encountered before, train them right from wrong with a system of punishments and rewards.
Maybe that's not exactly what you did, but the way you wrote it sure made it sound like that.

Kids are little animals, and need puppy school to train em, they respond the same way as dogs.
So do adults, they need house training in the same way. Especially boys who leave home, where mommy did everything for them.

Young children aren't mentally capable to handle advanced reasoning and logic to determine the proper action. So, in essence, yes, small children have the same reasoning capabilities as dogs and you need to treat them accordingly.
As they get older, you explain things more and allow for them to use their growing brains and developing psyche's to the extent possible, but that same underlying "don't cross this line or else" needs to remain in place and active.

Dude, you can expect anything you want. I expect my youngest dog to write thank you letters after people give her dog treats at Christmas time, but it's just not going to happen.
Why? I'm glad you asked. Not because of my expectations--or lack thereof. Simply because her little brain can't work in such an advanced way. That same thing applies to your kids. To expect a 2 year old to behave like and have the reasoning capabilities of a 7 year old is the exact same thing. It's just not physically possible.
Sounds to me, athlonfan, that, if you actually do have children, they probably act like that little punk who got her parents tossed off the AirTran flight because she thought SHE ran the show.

The thing little kids do not fail to pick up on when NO, or STOP doesn't work is some discomfort in the tail section.
I get so torqued when I hear some idiot saying to a screaming, temper tantrum having little brat "now honey, you musn't do that".
I just said OK, you want to scream I'll give you a reason to scream. Wow, it worked. My kids didn't have little hissy fits. None of them are in jail, none of them are child abusers and yes I am a grandfather twice.
My kids have grown into pretty well adjusted people. Yes they make mistakes but who doesn't? The whole problem with the younger generation is that they have not been held accountable for their actions. When I was in grade school the teacher could beat your tail for misbehaving. Funny, I can not remember a school shooting in my whole time of going to school. Not one, not anywhere.
I say give the teachers back the "board of eduacation" . :p :D Somebody needs to disipline the spoiled brats.
