Some sports guy on the radio was talking about soccer and American football and posed the question, "Do people in the UK put down our football as much as we put down their soccer?".

The americans make up boring sports which only they are interested in, think they are the best sports ever and make a world series when in fact they are the only country that participate.
We don't put down your poor excuse for 'football' (even though you never use your feet) as much as you put down our real football. We put you American football down....a lot more. :)

I don't put down any sport. But I don't agree with you that we think our sports are better than any other country's, or at least most of us. After a while, a tradition seems to be better than others, but the other people may think the same way about our tradition. So it seems only natural that some, okay I cave, alot of us would think our sports superior.
Also, if we have very few sports outside our own that we share with other countries, than why wouldn't the NFL, or NBA give it a little extra hype?

Actually... I put down UK "football" quite often. I find it one of the most boring sports in the world. Most of the time the ball is just getting kicked back and fourth into the other teams possession. To me, soccer or "football" is not a sport, it is a game... a very dull and boring one.

Football and fighting, it's why God made saturday.
As per us putting down American football, not particularly, namely because there arent really American sports that are particularly widely liked beyond the North American continent (only the Yanks could name a sporting event "The World Series" and then only include teams from a single continent), it's very much a case of out of sight, out of mind.
Plus of course factor in the fact that the rest of the world doesnt need breaks every 20 seconds in all of their sporting events so they can rush off to eat another hotdog, and your seeing further still why American sports dont particularly travel well.

Yeh, that would explain why it is the MOST POPULAR SPORT IN THE WORLD!

To each his own. If you weren't raised with American football then you can't be expected to like it, understand why it plays out as it does (the "start, stop"), etc. Me, I never liked soccer, because it's not real big in the USA, and I was never exposed to it that much so I can't see why people like it.

I have to chime in here. Just because it's the most popular sport in the world doesn't mean it's not boring. Look at religion. It's all a pack of lies but the majority of the people in the world believe in some form or another.
Bad idea to use the majority to defend it.
Soccer IS boring. It's low-scoring, it's slow-paced with all the running, and there's very little action overall--unlike an American football game or ice hockey or something.
Y'all riot over soccer because, apparently, you have nothing else to get involved in so deeply. Maybe try yoga or pilates or something.

I'm not into stop start games like American football.
When such an overwhelming majority are in favour of something on a sample of billions of people...well you can't argue with those sorts of statistics. You have to ask yourself why the majority of people don't like American football? Why is is that real football is more popular?
Because the whole world are stupid and America is right? :x

Nobody said anything about anybody who likes soccer being stupid. If soccer is the sport most popular outside of the USA then so be it. This has nothing to do with stupidity and "right'ness" because there is nothing for anyone to be "right" about. You can't expect to tell an American, "UK football is was better than American football, and you know I'm right", and have them agree with you, and vice versa. It's like China telling Bosnia that their alphabetical letters are cooler. Sports are a culture thing, and American and UK football are not popular in the opposite countries, that's just the way it was, is, and will be.

I mean that the reason the majority of people hate football is that the U.S. is only a small portion of the world. There are lots of people here that like soccer, and lots of people that don't. Some of the people here that don't like soccer can't make up their minds between the two options!
Everyone (even those who don't admit it) like American football, and don't even concern about kids watching people beat the **** out of each other for an hour or 2 on TV, instead, they leave that to the hippies to say hockey is too violent.

One thing i will say about the American perception of "Soccer" is that they largely seem quite ignorant of the athletic and physical demands of the sport.
Through my teenage years i mainly played Basketball, Rugby and Football at relatively decent standards, and i would have to say that football was by far and away the most physically demanding of the three. It's no coincidence that as a footballer, once you hit the age of 30 your generally considered as entering the twilight of your career.
I still play/train around five times a week these daysand coach semi-professionally, and over the years have played at Town level, have experience of Semi-Pro football, and the level of ability and fitness even at such lower levels of the game is phenomenal these days (largely thanks to the fact that standards have raised immensley over the last 15 years due to the increase in foreign players).
I also think part of the problem with the American perception of Soccer is that the way its played in the MLS and at grass roots in the States, is namby pamby at best if you ask me. If you want to play even recreationally in Europe you need to be strong, and you will take a kicking week in week out (over the years i've suffered several broken fingers, a couple of concussions, and a broken foot that kept me from playing for nearly two years, along with a host of other minor knocks and scrapes). From the way i interpret things in the US theyre far too sensetive to the physical battling elements of the game, football is a mans game and should be played as such.
