what's this dns opendns

Someone sent me this and its a newbie to me....does anyone know about the security risks...it runs ads on the side? Is it secure..what does it do? Someone suggested it to a friend...I know nothing about it...thanks in advance...opendns.com

It is one of these things that can be useful under a specific situation. I.e. your ISP DNS is not working well.

Otherwise (like many thingies that float around) it is just a "hip buzzword”.

I have few ISP; I tried OpenDNS, does nothing for my surfing.

Imagine how cool one sound when at the cocktail gathering he can say “You are still using your lame ISP DNS, I am using OpenDNS”.

Security? Well it just another server log that can be subpoena if you are on the “Dark Side of the force”.
