I just got a new gigabyte GA-5AX motherboard and i have switched my parts from my old desktop. Everything is fine except that my modem does not work. (The Modem failed to respond..) The com1/2 are installed correctly and the modem definately works. ( I have tried two different ones and they both work on other computers.(Zoltrix Intsp336 and one by ASK 56k). I have tried disabling the coms, i have switched the jumpers on the modems, I have also tried reserving an irq for them since they are ISA. No difference. What gets me is that I pop them out of the new computer into my other one and they work fine. In the other computer they work like PnP device and nothing needs to be adjusted in the BIOS. Is there a BIOS setting I have overlooked?

The options in the PNP/PCI config are:
PNP OS: (Yes)
Resources Controlled by: (Manual)
Reset COnfig Data: (Disable) ;I cant seem to change that one)
IRQs and DMAs all assign to: PCI/ISA pnp
PCI IRQ activated by: (level)
PCI IDE IRQ map to : PCI -AUTo

Any info on this would be very much appreciated and if anyone knows are resourceful website that would be great too!

Try setting PNP OS to No see if that helps.
Sounds crazy I know but it has worked for me a few times http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks, but I have tried that one already. If I let the computer halt on ALL ERRORS. I will see this:
Conflict I/O ports: 2F8

My onboard serial port is set to that and my modem is com2 irq 3

But if I disable the port, then I can't open the port in windows and the modem can't install on it either! Highly illogical!
What am I missing?

Edit the i/o range in device mgr. go to properties, resources, un-check "auto config" click change setting and scroll up or down to select a new i/o then check for conflicts.

Correct me if i'm wrong but if i remember right 2f8 is the address for com1 and com3 and 3f8 is the address for com2 and com4

If that Info is right, then what that is telling you is that something is on Com1 or Com3 already or is just not avalable. Any other devices?

I know on some motherboards there is an option to disable certian com ports, usually under the Intergrate Prefials, (sp?).

I duno if that helps.

Your I/O sounds right for COM2.

You need to disable COM2 in the BIOS because it is conflicting with COM2 on the modem.

Then go into Windows and let it detect new hardware from Add/Remove Hardware in Control Panel. It should find COM2 as well as your modem.

Hi,

Assuming that both modems are ISA, here is what I did when I tried to install an Acer ISA modem yesterday (see my post on RNAAPP).

First, I made sure that the modem was phyically set to com 3 (so that I do not have to disable the physical com 1 and com 2.

The address of com 3 is 3E8. Next, I changed the IRQ to 11.

I went to my bios and specifically set IRQ 11 to be ISA only.

I went into Windows and let it detect the hardware. It only detected the com port (com 3). I made sure that it had the right address and IRQ setting. I also made sure that these settings will not conflict with any other hardware.

Finally, I manually added a modem and let Windows try to detect it from all the com ports. The Acer modem was detected and I loaded the drivers.

SPECS: Asus P2L97 (old board)
Acer FM56-ITU/2 ISA (non p&p)

Hope this opens more areas for troubleshooting.

The bottom line is that the ISA slot must control the IRQ and it should not be shared by and other resources. Windows should follow suit... If it is done properly, then let Windows auto-detect for a modem...

disable it in the bios man... then go into windows and goto add devices...then select communication ports.....that's all ya have to do...

this is what i have to do with an old 28.8 non-pnp modem.
