i keep getting message windows popping up that explorer (the os) is performing an illegal operation. it happens several times an hour and usually only when i am playing winamp with a cd. i have recently tried overclocking my k62 450 to 475 and then to 500 and it would not run stable. so i have it set at 450 with every setting as it should be. this was not happening two weeks ago. the only thing that is different is i added some new altec lansing speakers and i have changed cdrom drives, although i was getting these general protection faults before changing drives. this is very annoying as it is happening about every 5 minutes...please help!!

Have you tried this?

Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information.
Tools, Version Conflict Manager. If there are any files that have been replaced with earlier versions of themselves, they show up here, and offer to let you install the "newer" ones. When done here, click on the "X" to close.

Then click on tool, system file checker. Select scan for altered files. Follow the prompts.

Finally, close that. Then click on tools, registry checker. If that finds no problems, then your WinDOZE is most likely cool.

Also in your popups, are there any references to DLL's? If so, one (or more) may be corrupted or out of date... You can check at the dll archive at:
http://solo.abac.com/dllarchive/

Hope some of this helps at least a little...

mike..
thanks for all the advice...

i scanned my system files and the following came up as possibly corrupted...

progman.exe
setupx.dll
tapiui.dll
vswk4.dll
vsflw.dll
vsexe2.dll
vsami.dll

I searched the dll archive and got two versions of setupx.dll. the rest were not there. does anyone have the rest of the dlls and the exe that i need to restore?? i did not find any of these files on my win98se cd...

this is all very strange. none of this was happening before i went out of town. i unplugged the computer completely when i left and when i get back, all this stuff happens http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

All the dll's and the exe should be on your cd, but hidden in the cab files...run sfc and have it extract the files you need from the cd

smokin1...
i tried what you said, but it wants a specific location on the cd. i tried searching using the find files program, and it could not find it. what do i do now?

Try using WinZip to view the "cab" files and do a search with Winzip, to many cab files to manually search.

I got ALOT of system errors when I bought some ram of a buddy who was going to sell his pc. It was the same type of ram I had in my pc but after being online and using memory intensive programs I would get the illegal dll errors and end up with the blue screen of death... Turns out it was the ram. It somehow got much hotter than my other ram card. I tried cooling it with a fan, which prolonged the length of time before I recieved errors.... Check your ram.

The vs... stuff doesn't sound to me like it came from Windows. Maybe a Virus Scan program??? VS?
Hmm, just found the vswk4.dll on my system. Identifies as SCC Stream Filter from Inso corporation. Outside-In viewer technology??

Maybe part of the Winamp install?

yes it could be part of the install, but the problem dll is gen-auto.dll, which is the plugin that is constantly checking the cd drive and when the drive is available to the system and has an audio disc in it, gets winamp to play the cd automatically. I still have the dll, but in a folder so winamp cannot see it. I am still explorer errors occasionally since I have hidden the dll and restored everything that the system file checker says might be corrupted, which is not that unusual for this system, but is very annoying. I am pretty positive that it is not my ram. I have had the system since october and it was brand new at the time. One thing though, I have tried to overclock my sysytem to 475(stock at 450) and when it ran stable at that, to 500. I could not get it stable no matter what voltage I tried, so I took it back to the normal settings and left it there. But ever since then i have been getting these general protection faults.....
