I love the MSDNAA. Just got my serial key in my inbox and I'm downloading it right now. I'll let you all know what I think of it tonight when its installed.

MSDN Academic Alliance is a Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft) program which provides some Microsoft developer tools for free to students and faculty in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, and related fields. The participating schools pay an annual fee to avail this alliance.

One of the benefits of MSDNAA is that the participating department can acquire free copies of Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Visual Studio .Net, and other Microsoft products for lab computers. The program also allows students and faculty to obtain free copies of selected Microsoft products, including Windows XP Professional and Visual Studio .Net, for use in coursework and personal non-commercial projects. Despite its name, a MSDNAA account is not a true MSDN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSDN) account and cannot be used to access the subscriber's section of the MSDN website or its downloads. Access to MSDNAA software is done through a separate website run either by E-Academy or by the university/high school itself.

Colleges and universities are mainly served by this program, but a high school version of the MSDNAA is also available.

The list of software each college and university gets is dependent on the agreements made by that particular school. Access is usually given to students who meet certain requirements (must be currently enrolled in or teaching course(s) in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics).
Just in case someone does not know what (MSDNAA) is. :t

Yeah, i got Vista Business free through MSDNAA, plus most of the Office 2007 suite.

Seems the tution fees do pay for something (i hope to god im not paying that much just for the tutors - they're shocking)

I'd expect us to get keys for the other versiosn of Vista too once it goes retail, given that part of my MSDNAA account is all OS and NOS'es from Win2000/Server onwards, including major update packs.

I can't remember the source but it said something along the lines of "Everything students need will be in the business edition of vista and they wont need any other versions"

I'll have a dig around for the source.....maybe not.

Anyway my opinion so far is not to bad. Will take a while to get used to Aero and the UAC but everything is running smoothly. All drivers are working (sound card was a bit of trouble. It's a Terratec Aureon 5.1 and there are no Vista drivers but Vista seemed to find some that worked...)

All programs I used work even though some display a message about compatibility issues (Visual Studio, Nero).

The only real problem I found is that if I install a virtual CD program it pretty much destroys Vista (Blue screen of death and would reuse to start - had to re-install).

In case your wondering I'm using a Think Centre A51p and running the following Apps:

Visual Studio 2005 (SP1 and .NET 3.0 extension)
Nero 7
Live Messenger

I would have Fire fox and Opera installed but I have no internet connection where I live so its pointless.....for now

something along the lines of "Everything students need will be in the business edition of vista and they wont need any other versions"

Thats true enough, to be honest there is no real compelling reason IMHO for me as a power user to need the additional features offered by "Premium", nevermind as a student. Other than Bitlocker (which after my joyful experiences with EFS i probably wouldnt use) the only other features you seem to be missing out on are some of the multimedia programs, which in all honest i would have probably just ended up replacing with my own preferred third-party apps. Plus, from what i hear, the extra offered in "Ultra" arent worth getting ones knickers in a twist over.

--Jakk:t

I'm thinking home premium will be plenty for me.

They have educational versions on ebay just now for £65. But £10 postage and that price is excluding VAT.

So £75 is cheaper than that! I thought it would be bloody expensive!

What is the difference between the home premium and the ultimate. Do I still get the cool 3d desktop and the aero desktop thing with home premium?
