Stupid iTunes question

Yes, I realize iTunes is a stupid rip since to buy an entire album from iTunes costs the same as to buy a CD which has better audio quality and gives you a physical CD, but sometimes an album only has 4 or 5 songs you like so it's cheaper to just buy them individually on iTunes...so...when buying music from iTunes what format is it in and is there some simple way of burning it to a CD that regular CD players can play (i.e. players that cannot play MP3 CDs)?
