have recently bought an Asus P2B-f motherboard. Thought I speced out the best
overall board. But I have one major problem. My configuration is as follows:

Asus P2b-f >>ver.1.00 bois Bx2f1009
Intel P2 350 MHz (not overclocked YET!)
128mb pc100mb Samsung GH series SDram
8.4 WD 66UDMA HD

AGP **Blank (soon still specing)
PCI #1 Matrox Mystique 220 PCI video card (good card when it came out)
PCI #2 Diamond Monster2 8mb 3D accelerator (very nice)
PCI #3 Linksys LNEPCI2 NIC
PCI #4 Blank
PCI #5 Blank
ISA #1USR ISA 33.6 Modem (it sucks) save your money don't buy USR 3Com
ISA #2 SB AWE32 PnP ISA soundcard (want a Live value or monster.)

MS Digital sound system 80 USB speaker system (decent but expensive) got'em
when they first came out.
UMAX 1220U USB Scanner. (surprisingly a good scanner)
Windows 98

Ok you techs out there lets try to figure this one out. Now let's get to the
fun part. EVERYTHING WORKS, BUT In order to get to my scanner I have to
disconnect my speakers from the USB port. Now the speakers work in the upper
and lower USB ports, and the Scanner works in the upper and lower ports. BUT
THE DAMM SCANNER WILL NOT WORK IF THE SPEAKERS ARE CONNECTED. This I ain't
believing. Spent a **** load of cash just to unplug the speakers to scan a
naked picture of my wife. Wonder who was the rocket scientist that designed this.
Now mind you that I've just upgraded from an Asus TX97 with 64mb ram using USB
and all worked fine no kinks in the system, ran like a Swiss watch.

Anybody got any ideas? If so send them to me cause this SUCKS. Love my toy hate
the headachs. I know many of you feel the same.

The speakers work whether the scanner is pluged in or not. The scanner will not work if the speakers are pluged in. The goal is to have the scanner work while the speakers stay pluged in.

Win 98 shows no conflicts in DM. USB Root Hub and controller both in DM. Win98 sees the scanner but cannot communicate with it.

I'll take a shot.

First. Check Device Manager for conflicts between the USB Host Controller or Root Hub and some other device. If that's the case, assign different IRQs and addresses in whatever combination works.

Second. Your Bios settings is preventing the computer from correctly responding to the signals from the DSS-80. If that's the case, You can only hope for a Bios upgrade or fix from Asus that addresses this problem.

Third. The possible workaround to the problem is to do the following:

1. Unplug the USB cable from the USB hub on the computer.
2. Insert either end of the stereo audio cable into the audio input jack located on the front of the DSS80 speaker.
3. Insert the other end of the stereo audio cable into the audio output (Speaker Out) connector on the sound card.

Thank you for your try Bleeding Edge but all of those options had been explored. I'm almost certain it's in the BIOS, but just can't nail it down.

That is an interesting dilemna, just because I am experiencing just about the same symptoms with my Digital sound System 80...

System info -

Soltek mainboard w/ Award 4.51 bios
32 megs PC100 spec
Voodoo 3 3000 video
Generic 40x CD-rom
Memorex 2x burner
*NO* sound card (relying on the USB speaks)

(conflicting items)
MS DSS-80 USB speaker kit
Qtronix scorpious 980N USB Keyboard

Interesting case, here, the Microsoft Speakers, which I cannot get to work for more than 20 seconds, regardless, cause the keyboard to freeze completely when anything accesses them. Otherwise, system works fine.

It's like if you have any other USB item plugged in with the digital sound system 80,
it's predestined to automatic failure. Arrgh! Any help would be greatly appreciated, and since I am a newbie (at *this* site, hehe), please Email me to let me know someone replyed, I'd really appreciate! Thanx!
