I have 6.4 Maxtor UDMA 33 as my primary and a 8.4 Maxtor as my slave. I have the intel BX6 R2 Mainboard. Win 98 is my OS, and I have 128MB of Ram. I have had this OS installed for about 6 months.

Lately I have been having system slowdows (freezups) and then I have been hearing a low audible hum. At first I thought it was the OS, but today I received a blue screen of death message that said that "Windows was unable to write to drive C:. Some data files may be lost". Drive C is not even close to being full I hav about 2.3 gigs free on it.

This low hum that I hear during freezup is, I am assuming ..the HD. Has anyone else had this problem ? Should I be looking for a new drive ? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Call Maxtor right after you backup that HD! I would like to think they would help you out with a new drive if you've only had it for 6 mos.

The BX6-R2 is Abit rather than Intel board.
Since that's a 'clockers board, the system is overclocked, right?
What speed & settings?
Anything changed recently? New setting?
Have heard many problems with Maxtor's when running at the "odd" speeds, such as 83 or 112.

Set things to standard speed for your CPU & see if noise goes away. If not then definately call Maxtor, they're pretty good about warranting drives with minimum hassle. make it easy on yourself & have the drive in hand when you call because they WILL want info from it's label.
