Hello everyone,
I downloaded/ran the Pheonix Y2K's "test/fix tool" and it reported that my PC passed the Y2K test.
The next day I powered up the PC and it complained that "the SYSTEM.INI file is damaged and it may be needed to run Windows again C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VFIXD.vdx". I CD to Windows\system\ and saw a file named "vfixd.vdx", size = approx. 670k, and the date is something like 02-08-15 (yes! year 2015) while most of other files are dated May, 98 (I use Win98.)
I went ahead and DELETED that vfixd.vdx file.
Now, every time I boot the system up it would complain that "The SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but it doesn't exist"
I edited the SYSTEM.INI but could not find anything that is relevance to the problem.
Please help me on this
Thank you much
Steve

Easy...just type "SFC" at the run line...it starts system file checker. Click on the settings tab, then check the "check for changed files" and "check for missing files" boxes. Now start the checker and restore only the damaged or missing files.

BBA,
I followed your instruction but got stuck right after the "SFC" started.
This is what I did:
1) Run "sfc" at the run line
2) Click on "settings"
3) Check boxes on "check for changed files"
and "check for deleted files"
4) Click on "start"
Right after I clicked on "start" the following message appears: "System File Checker can't check the following folder because the volume is locked C:\Windows\system\Precopy
Close all other programs and click Retry..."
Any more ideas?
Thanks for your help BBA!
Happy Holidays!

Hmmm...very interesting...did you try it from a fresh boot?

When you ran the system check tool, did you delete it afterwards? If so, re-install and either leave it alone or do it through control panel. my 1.5c

do a clean boot and be sure that you don't have any disk utility programs running, they will cause 'drive locked' errors.
