HI All!

So I've got a little peer to peer ( one W98 machine and one NT) going and want to get the most out of my W98 drive. If I convert it to FAT32 will the NT machine be able to read files from that drive?
I have a friend who tells me I can convert the W98 drive to NTFS, is this possible? Do I want to do this? wouldn't FAT32 be more efficient/ space saving?

I dont think W95/W98 can read an NTFS partition

I didn't think so either but my friend is thinking he saw a utility that will enable it. Has since lost the URL for it. Was wondering if anyone had heard of anything.

NT4 cant see FAT32 drives anyhow!

Win2000 can though.

I read a post somewhere about an app that allows win98 to see NTFS partitions. Like your friend, I can't remember the name though and I can't verify this with any experience with it.

If you have two machines on a peer to peer network, one Win98 one NT, and you want to access the files on the win98 machine from the NT machine, you can. Its the 98 OS that reads the files then passes them to the NT machine. So by that theory, a Win98 fat32 machine will see an WinNT NTFS machine and read its files, and vice-versa.

I wouldn't use any special software to allow 98 to run in NTFS, or NT to run in fat32.

Yes..there is a utility to allow NT4 to read and write FAT32 and there is a utility to allow Win98 to read and write to NTFS4 and 5.

The catch is, Win98 still wont boot from NTFS and NT4 still wont boot from FAT32...so it's only good as a tool to read data from otherwise inoperable OS systems drives. If you ever had to save data from a dead OS that is on a NTFS drive, this is too cool!

Win98 NTFS FAT32 (http://www.winternals.com)

Well Thats super cool news. Thanks. All I really want to do is share data.
on my NT machine I've got a 2 gig partition NTFS (C http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif that just has system files and OS. The other partition has programs, and the last partition is my storage with .mp3's and all my .zip files. All partitions are NTFS.
Same goes for the W98 machine, except all partitions are FAT16.
I want to convert the W98 partitions to FAT32 to get more space, but I want to make sure the NT machine can "see" the stuff on the W98 machine and vice versa.
Do I even need this program? If I convert my W98 machine to FAT32 will my NT machine still be able to access the shared files?
W98 can already see the NTFS drives... now that I'm really thinking about it I've got a big question mark over my head ?????

Finger,

Don't need the NTFS driver if all you are doing is getting files over peer to peer. You would need the drivers if you had both NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 living on the same 98 machine. Since your 98 machine has one FAT16 drive you do not need NTFS for 98. I would suggest you convert your 98 drive to FAT 32 however.

www.sysinternals.com (http://www.sysinternals.com) has drivers if you need them. But you don't at this point.

Oh, and Finger...get a real network!
