As you all know, Vista will become available to all of us little people in a few weeks... (I think). Do you already have a slot placed on your Vista wish list? Which version do you plan fork money over towards? I havent really thought that much about it. I'm using XP Pro now with my PC which does some gaming but mostly video & graphic editing.
Maybe Vista Home Premium or Ultimate..... dunno, big price difference though.

I'm thinking of SP2...should be out in a year to 18mo. Drivers for all the lagging products **cough-creative labs-cough** should be stable or usable by then.

Even though I could get a free copy of Vista Business, I'm sticking with XP Pro.

Staying with XP Home for now ... all my apps work with it
and some of them may not be compatible with Vista
Plus, I have an old (4 yr) Dell 8200 with only 512MB of
Rambus memory .. Vista needs more than that & that
type of memory is not cheap .. also cpu is only 1.8Ghz

I plan on getting the version that comes out in late 2008 or early 2009.
I will NOT be installing any versions prior to that date.

I have been working with the RC's and got the final recently. Now I have XP Pro 64 and 32 bit versions, Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Right now that's my order of preference for use. I like the power XP 64 gives me for working with memory and cpu intensive application, but there is the issue of drivers and program compatibility. Those issues are more apparent in Vista. I think it's going to be at least a year before most of these issues are worked out. Till then, I don't think it is a good choice for a primary os. Don't get me wrong, it is a great os, just everybody else needs to get on board.

Think I'll wait a couple years, XP SP2 is fine for now, at least I have drivers and few bugs. ;)

l've RC2 Ultimate running on a Tyan Guiness 2462, dual Athlon 1200MPs.
It is rock solid - so far - rather impressive.
There were driver issues, getting 3com network drivers was a pain - but the problem was of my own making.
The compatability software and driver install features are very good - reliable.
l have no sound - Aureal Vortex related - but expected that hic cup and will find an answer.
All in all - this is proving impressive - and a huge bandwagon of new apps to play with.
l really, really like it. It just works. lnstall was about 20 minutes.
There is debate in regards a clean install or upgrade from previous OS.
An upgrade install would have maintained my Audio setup but l'm sure it doesn't go cleanly - just an opinion.
Dual 1200MP's and everyday stuff is fine, there are issues with video media performance
but l was aware of that and won't take a view 'til audio is sorted and the processors
and unusual graphics on this box upgraded.
l was poo-pooish about this OS - all the hooha and promise of everything slowly turning to ashes
but l am won over.
This is an impressive work.
There is an explosion of new - updated apps to work with, especially online live stuff. T
he design crowd should be mooning over the replacements for Frontpage ad visual Studio.
Years of effort are coming together behind Vistas's rollout and it is gobsmacking.
Check yer Hotmail - it's updated. Check MSN, check out the wealth of new 'LIVE' Beta apps not to
mention Office etc etc.
This is a massive rollout of technology and.................... it all works.

Not for another 5 years.
I'll wait till its got a few service packs and a considerable amount of bug fixes under its belt and then I might consider it. I'm still on win2k sp4 at the moment and I'm only just considering a move to XP Pro SP2 as it seems to be a reasonably stable platform now.

if i were to get vista, it'll be the 64bit version
but why would i want to go to vista when i can play my games just fine in XP?
why do i even bother with Windows? the only reason i'm in windows are for the games, and for my TIVO (ATI TV recorder software)
which there are no versions available for Vista yet, so, it's totally pointless for me to go to Vista, and for my work, i can do that using any other OS.
I see Vista as only a Fashion show for the time being, probably we'll have to wait for at least another 2 or 3 years, before we see applications and software migrated to it
same story as XP, it took almost that long for software to "PROPERLY" migrate from Win9x to Win2000/XP, during the years of Win2K and early XP, most applications didn't work well, or was very Rough
now that XP is at the end of its life cycle is when all the software and applications are well polished.... and how long did that take? about 5+ years
so there is no hurry at all going to Vista, it might well be another Win2k sort of phase, which later one we'll have something like Vista 2.0, and that is when things starts to get well polished for Vista 1.0
Anyways i'm "happy" with XP, and i until i don't find a game that explicitly will not run unless you have Vista 1.0, then i don't see myself upgrading to Vista 1.0 anytime soon. :D

I'll be getting Vista when I upgrade my hardware, and I won't be upgrading my hardware until DX10 graphics cards and quad core cpu's can be had for a reasonable price. By that time enough updates should be available to make Vista run properly and I'll finally have a rig capable of running it. I'm guessing that'll be 2008.

I'll upgrade to Vista when Vista SP1 comes out. I've heard that SP1 will be a kernel rewrite. How true that is I don't know, but I will wait until then. :)
