Hi.
Try to identyfy what modem it is you got there's a lot of ESP models.
Then download a new driver, you can find them here. http://www.trust-site.com/support/browse.htm?id=19
That should help with both your problems.
How are you determining the speed of the modem?? Are you going off an LED on the modem itself? Or are you doing a status display on your live connection to assess your real-time connection speed?
Note that, 99% of the time, a 56K modem will not connect at 56K, but somewhere around 48K if you are lucky and the phone lines are willing http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Also - what are you connecting to? - Sure the number you're calling is rated for 56K?
You'll also want to check both your modem properties within control panel to see what your maximum connect speed is - next , check up the properties of your dial-up connection settings and make sure your ISP has set that to default at 56K+ (check under my computer, dial-up networking) Most ISP's, as a matter of policy, set their default connection speed in their set-up to either 28.8 or 33.6 which has confounded some customers with 56K modems to no end because they have everything else set correctly and didn't know to check here.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Otherwise, I'd have to say you're absolutely correct and need to rip out and replace the driver of the modem within your system.
One last little item - are you absolutely sure you bought a 56K modem and not a 33.6 modem which the manufacturer claims is up-grade-able to 56K with a mail-in coupon and $$$ for postage & handling http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
