After checking with several sources I’ve determined my cable modem (SURFBoard 2100)connection to be extremely slow and need your help in seeing what I can do to improve it. First let me give you my machine configurations and see if you can tell of anything that may be causing the bottleneck I seem to have. I am using Win98 SE and using Internet Connection Sharing on the client on a 10/100 LAN (both cards are 10/100). Both machines have several GB of free (contiguous) HD space.

Machine Server
processor K2-450
memory 128
swap file 328MB (fixed on separate partition)

Machine Client
processor PIII-600
memory 128
swap file Managed by Win98

I used three different setups
1- the one setup during installation
2- using speed patch for Win98 (from http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml )
3- using Ispeed (set for MTU of 1500)

and downloaded the 15 MB file at http://help.rr.com/rredesk.asp?entity=5

These are the results I got:

set Time/speed (KB/s)
Server 1 6:26/39.9
2 6:13/41.5
3 8:38/29.9

set Time/speed (KB/s)

Client 1 6:26/39.9
2 6:14/40.9
3 7:10/35.3

All d/l were done about the same time of the day and on two different days. As you can see this is EXTREMELY slow compared to the speeds posted on the speedguide site (15MB file in less than two minutes).

Thanks for any help you can give me.
Rick

OK guys, you are throwing KB, Kb, kb, and even k/s around and now I am getting confused! Anybody have the equation from KB to kb?

Thanks
Rick

hmmmm, you are with Roadrunner, right? And on there server when you tried to d/l that 15mb file?

I was crawling along trying to d/l that thing, but I'm on @home. I almost hate to tell you this, but when I usually d/l stuff, and expecially stuff from @Home's servers, I can get a 15mb file in 15-25 seconds! So, if it's taking your setup minutes instead of seconds, then something is indeed out of whack.

I'd contact your service and get them on the case ASAP. Often it's a router junction or some other equiptment malfunction that is out of your control.

i'm on at home also, but 15 mb in less than 1 minute a bit high. 15mb in 25 seconds is over 600 k/s. i usually hover around 450 or so.

Well then, I guess I'm really at the bottom of the barrel....

The most I've ever downloaded at was like 65KB/sec, which would be 520 Kb/sec. Usually I'm between 35 and 45 KB/sec, or 280 - 360 Kb/sec. Hmmmm

I'm on Charter pipeline, near Knoxville, TN

I just got roadrunner setup 3 days ago and was pretty pleased to go from 3 kb/sec with my USR 56k to anywhere between 50 and 140 kb/sec. When I went to that roadrunner help site and downloaded the 15mb file however it took me three minutes and was at 85 kb/sec, so am I understanding this right- you guys download the same thing in seconds? If thats the case than what should I be getting for download speeds? I was pleased with the big jump until I read your posts and saw what i'm missing. Thanks for any info on this.

i would just base it on the ISP. i have comcast@home, and i am one of 5 people on the node near my house. I was the first one to get cable around here, so i would assume i lead node, i am right with this? If your ISP has many people on the same node, you will notice a drop in performance cuz everyone is sharing the bandwidth. i believe as of the 29th of dec comcast has 5gig bandwidth, not positive though.

Basically, when it comes to downloading, it really depends on how many people are on the internet. Picture it as a highway. Between 3pm to 10pm don't expect the highway to be "empty". I work 3rd shift and notice considerable speed differences during early morning and late night downloading. From 70KB/s to 190KB/s. I also use Roadrunner. But during the day after lunchtime, I am lucky to get 30KB/sec from anysite.

U guys really should try Download Accelerator Plus.. it's freeware and works great here.. instead of downloading the file once it downloads four pieces of it with four different loggins... It really does what it claims to do.. Almost every time I get the full 512kbs my provider offers.. (ok perhaps it's still **** but here in Holland it's better then paying alot of money to those monpolitic suckers at the phonecompany.)

ow you can get it at www.downloadaccelerator.com (http://www.downloadaccelerator.com)

Hate to say it, but each cable company/region has it's own speed limitation for customer rates. In Fl, the one way cable rate is unlimited, except by the server loading, and the 2 way is limited to 35-40K/sec upload rate and 300K/sec download. This still is while maintaining a 3M/sec to 6M/sec connection.

That being said, I still hardly ever see above 200K/sec and most of the time I see around 35-70K/sec.

ricky1...you could have a PC problem with the surfboard.

You should try it in different slots or in the other computer to see if it changes anything.
