Windows XP Home
Biostar P4SXQ
SIS650
480Mb PC2100 Ram

I just finished reformating my daughters system due to an overload of junk from the grandkids games, and the system was running very slow. I copied all of the music & picture files to my HDD to replace on hers later. After reinstalling Windows the system now has no audio. I reinstalled all of the drivers & checked everything in the bios and it shows everthing ok. When I open the Control Panel for the sound it is all greyed out and tells me there is no audio device installed. I have updated all of the drivers, unplugged and plug in everything I can think of, rebooted no less than 10 times, all to no avail. Any other ideas or suggestions?

The next problem is when I tried to network this computer back to mine it keeps bringing up a dialog box with the computer name and asking me for the password. Since i'm the one installed the system I know that there is no password, any idea what thats all about. I did get around that by burning all of her picture & music files (almost 2000 pics of the kids) and copying them to the right folder but I need to resolve this password problem before I bring it back, just in case she has more problems and I need to network with mine again?

Any help greatly appricated

Ed

1.) You must not be installing the audio driver properly, it is not the correct audio driver, or the sound card has failed. You can et a new sound card for $10.

2.) You must supply an administrator password to install Windows. Try pressing the Enter key when it asks for the password if you left it blank during the install.

Thanks for the reply!

I went to the device manager and it shows everything good. Control panel says no device installed, I just may have to opt for an add-on sound card.

As for the password it never asked for one when I installed it, and I did try to leave that field blank, only for that same dialog box to come up again. For now that isn't my biggest problem.

I did download the drivers from Biostar last night, but that didn't help. I remeber having this same problem when I reformatted my laptop. I couldn't get the sound to work then either, even after downloading the driver dirvers direct from Compaq, I finally downloaded a different set for WinXP from I don't remember where... but it worked after that. A cheap soundcard might just be faster.
Thanks

The new sound card did the trick, I got around the network password by burning everything to a dvd and copying it to the appropriate folder.
Thanks,
