I think the fan is noisey in my power supply. Are they a sealed unit normaly, or can a replacement fan be installed. Its a ATX 250watt, by Linkworld.

Thanx, Biff

I had one go bad once. I went to the local flea market and found some old power supply fans at a computer junk dealer...gave him a dollar for a good ball bearing fan, been quiet ever since!

Biff,
I've never seen a power supply that was sealed, but I have only been inside a few.
The standard size is 80mm, its usually called an 80mm case fan. If your old fan has the wires soldered into the board, you can just splice it if you use good wire connectors. Make sure you put everything back firm and secure, because I think a lot of noises come from vibration when something is a little loose.

My PSU fan suddenly started sounding like a Boeing 747 about 4 months ago. I gently prodded it a few times with a screwdriver through the grill (while the PC was switched off, of course). It's been running as quiet as a Rolls Royce ever since. In fact, it's so quiet I sometimes put my hand near and feel the warm air flow just to make sure it's still working. Guess I was just lucky enough to prod it in just the right way! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

It's not a good idea to meddle inside the PSU unless you know exactly what you are doing. The capacitors still store some heavy voltage long after the PC has been switched off.

Be very carefull when opening and working on power supplies, they store enough electrical energy to seriously shock you.
I recently replaced a fan with a three wire
smart fan, just run the wires out with the
rest of the outputs and connected to motherboard for monitoring.

Thanx for the replys
I like the idea of a smart fan hooked up to the m/b. Glad I posted, I wasn't aware of capacitors inside-aaarrrr yeeeowww
