Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Upgrading an ancient Compaq
I've got a Compaq Presario 9546 (yeah, I know it's ancient) I've added 24MB of RAM (32MB total) and am now looking at replacing the 100Mhz Pentium processor with an aftermarket processor upgrade like the Zerus or Evergreen 200Mhz or 233Mhz MMx setups. Has anyone out there gone this route? How successful were you with this? Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated! And yes, I'm standing by for many folks to recommend that I take a 3.5" floppy disk and simply install a new system around it! I would love to, but I'm working on a tight budget.

2336,
It's probably not a good idea to double post on this board, doing so will probably provoke those who may well otherwise try to help you. It's just bad etiquette, most everyone surfs through most of the posts here and will find your question anyway.

2336,
The little that I know about Compaq is that they are quite proprietary (you probably already know that). There may be some workarounds to that, but I'm a little doubtful. I'm sure there are others on the board that have owned a Compaq and can tell you a lot more about them. Sorry I'm not more help on this one. If anybody could advise you on upgrade options, Evergreen probably could. Have you checked out their site? http://www.evertech.com/
Good luck in all,
Chainsaw

Chainsaw and others,
Sorry folks, I'm new to message boards and such. I'll keep this in mind in the future.
Kinda frustrating trying to update this old Compaq, once again, any input (other than placing it in the circular file) would be appreciated.
I upgraded a pressario 4704 with a power leap. http://www.powerleap.com
You can check their "approved" list to see if your system is on it or what you might run into, or call them.
I think on an upgrade like this, you either pop it in and it works, or it doesn't, no matter what brand you buy. Sometimes you need updated bios, but most of the Compaqs you can't do this. If you have a flash bios, you might be able to get an update from Compaq too.
Beck,
Thanks for the info. I've surfed through Power Leap and also Concept Manufacturing (makes the Speed chip) and their stuff looks promising. Thanks again.
