I just installed a IBM LS120 to replace a floppy. Works great except when I need to copy to disk, system says to insert disk into drive "A"and won't copy to LS120. I've tried setting seek floppy, drive letter swap, doesn't seem to work. IDEA'S???
thanks

This isn't an answer to yor question, but unless your a SysOpt homeboy valid inqueries often go un-answered. I think they get blinded by the propellers.

Well Hello Gene http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Sorry I was busy with my JOB (Bagman http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif) that I hadnt had a chance to answer you before now.

There is a couple of reasons why a LS120 might not work in your system.
1. Your bios doesnt fully support the LS120 (check with your motherboard manufacture for a bios update and make sure the bios does support the LS120)
2. you have a loose connection either with the data cable or power connector.

When you have a moment please list more information concerning your system configuration...IE: make and model of motherboard/ Bios revision ect.

Thank's for the input System:PC100MB,PII Celeron@500MHZ,24gig HD,Bios date 7-17-1999.
Ichecked connections, the drive works great, it gives me trouble only when trying to copy a file to disk;it keeps promting me to incert disk in drive"A"-LS120 is currently listed as drive "E". thanks again

Mntsnow, you have taken my post too personally. With 5300+ members, I'm sure gene was not waiting for you to answer, just someone. I was merely trying to revive his post (I also have an LS120) and to expose "possible" pomposity with this forum.
I have posted legitimate problems in the past with not even a single reply.

I'm sorry to hear that Bagman....I would be happy to help you too http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif List away! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
or give me the links to your questions and I will be happy to give you my 2cents worth. But when I do a search by your name for the last 30 days I dont come up with ANY unanswered questions...

I'm sorry I might have got off on the wrong foot with you Bag..But it was just only 2 hours since Gene's post and having "someone" offering sound advise. Believe me I enjoy helping others (both for Free as well as for Pay) and would do so every waking minute if I didnt have bills to pay..LOL)

Gotcha Gene....What you need to do is create a shortcut in your "send to" menu that leads to the "E" drive. (this is a known configuration problem with the LS type disk drives since they are a IDE device and Windows only wants to use FDC devices as A and B)

To create the shortcut you need to do is:

1. open up "my computer and right click on the LS drive and choose "create shortcut" (it will say cant place shortcut here do you want it on the desktop...choose YES)

2: minimize the explorer window so you can see the desktop. right click on the LS shortcut Icon and choose "CUT"

3. maximize the explorer window and navigate to this directory

c:/windows/send to

once you have that directory open (you will see shortcuts called A:, Create shortcut ect) right click with your cursor inside the folder and choose "PASTE" (this will put the LS shortcut in that folder At that time you can also RENAME the shortcut to what ever you want to call it)

4. Close all the windows and choose a file that you want to send/save to the LS120 drive and right click on it....Then choose the SENDTO and then click on the LS Icon and it will then save to the LS120 drive http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

It may be just a simple fix. Did you remove your old floppy from the device manager? Did you turn off the floppy support in the bios? Give this a try if you didn't already.

Gene I have LS120 in my system when i had win95 it recognazet it as removeble devisce and gave it letter E. Now i have Win98SE and it sees LS120 as a floppy drive B it looks strange but LS120 works good. I don't know why Win98 doesn't wont to see LS120 as high capasity removeble device.

still having problem with LS120;Have tried all previous suggestions-same results LS drive works -Every time I remove floppy drive from device manager it takes LS with it upon reboot system finds new harware&puts drivers in for a floppy. It wouldn't be a problem except, I can't seem to make a boot disk(or anything else that requires "A"drive)-system promts to install a disk in "A"won't let me use "E"(LS120)

Have you set your BIOS up to see another drive for B?

You can also disable A (your regular floppy drive) from the BIOS, but in all my dealings I find that Windows will still continue to see it even though it is disabled in the BIOS and having the drive out of the system. I'm sure there is a registry change to be made, but I haven't found it.

Susan-I've tried all the diferent bios settings I can think of(but I'm no expert)-auto detect comes up a "Flopical"drive both "A"&"B" floppies are disabled, settings for floppy seek, drive letter swap,I have removed the floppy from the device manager(it takes the LS with it) this has got me stumped(but thats not too hard)
thanks for the input & merry X-mas
