I tried to boot **** Small Linux from a CD but it failed sometime in the middle of the process. I hit the reset button to start over and now I cannot use my CD-ROM. It will not boot from the CD drive and even in Windows if I put in a music CD it makes sounds like it's looking for something then ejects. Was something of the failed boot saved in some persistent CD drive storage? In the Bios? Some other firmware? How do I get my CD-ROM back?

Thanks

It's more likely that your CD drive happened to die for good during the first attempt to boot from the Linux CD.

Think about it.

You killed the drive, not the Linux CD.

There is no persistent storage on a CD ROM drive. Once you turn off the PC, the memory is cleared.

Buy a DVD Burner as a replacement, they are much cheaper now and only a few dollars more than a plain CD ROM drive.

Yeah, it was supposed to say "killed MY CD drive". I don't see any way to edit it.

if it can't even boot from the drive, then it's not a windows issue. borrow another cd drive and see if that works.

I was thinking more along the lines of the CMOS or maybe something about the failed boot attempt getting stored in the MBR.

Nope, doesn't happen that way.

Well, I switched it with an old drive from an old machine and it works - sorta. Actually, it seems the only disks the new drive wont read are my Xubuntu and DSL live CD's (and you know those are the only disks I care about). It acutally boot the DSL disk once but it hasn't worked since - can't even read it in Windows. Everything else seems fine. There's another drive in this machine. I'll switch master/slave and see if the other drive will boot from the disks.

I suppose the drive that wasn't working is toast.
