Hi,Hoping someone can help,my nehew asked me to fix his old 486,all went well till i tried to update his bios and it fried it oh well,i told him i would get him a new case and motherboard and set him up with something better, well i ordered a case,mb,power supply from tiger-direct,
i installeda new 3.5 drive, his old harddrive, and an 8x cdrom,with16mb of ram a nd a 6x86 m2 300 chip,i have gone overthe setup 10-15 times, this thing is driving me nuts! it sounds like it is bootin but no video what so ever! i red somewhere it might be the ram,so i put in a 32 mb chip now it continually beeps, still no video!
I tried a new video card,i tried diff slots.
i tired unpluggin the keyboard to male sure a key wasn't stuck,it still beeped.
Any ideas????? anybody!
Thanks in advance

Just been over to tiger site all they want to do is sell the mobo won't give link to manual,
Mobo is probably a rebadge but now we hit the catch 22 question as if it doesn't power up to BIOS screen we can't get BIOS string to find out who made it.
I'll try and see if I can find out some more, I might get lucky. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

what are the beeps like?is it a couple of beeps? or five beeps? are they short? are they long? or a mix?
the type of beeps provided is the boards way of telling you it isnt working properly, or some item connected to it isnt working right. as it is beeping, the mobo and cpu are probably fine. unless it is one long continual beep when it could be anything....let us know how many beeps there are and i'll check it out for you....

1 Have you tried a diff video card.
2 if if only started beeping after new ram try other sticks,
3 this is what I often use as a last resort before getting test gear out.
disconnect hard drive, cd rom, floppy, and any card not ness for display, see if it powers up into diplay screen, if not check all jumpers again mostly re CPU speed.
if this fails please post what mobo it is, so we can all have another llok at the problem. best of luck. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Just a thought as it is continually beeping have you jumpered the CMOS batt to on, some mobo's will give a long beep followed by continual short beeps if battery is not giving power out.

AMI-Bios
Except for beep code #8, these codes are always fatal.
1 beep Refresh failure
2 beeps Parity error
3 beeps Base 64K memory failure
4 beeps Timer not operational
5 beeps Processor error
6 beeps 8042 - gate A20 failure
7 beeps Processor exception interrupt error
8 beeps Display memory read/write failure
9 beeps ROM checksum error
10 beeps CMOS shutdown register read/write error
11 beeps Cache memory bad

1-1-3 Your computer can't read the configuration information stored in the CMOS. Replace the motherboard.
1-1-4 Your BIOS needs to be replaced.
1-2-1 You have a bad timer chip on the motherboard; you need a new motherboard.
1-2-2 The motherboard is bad.
1-2-3 The motherboard is bad.
1-3-1 The motherboard is bad.
1-3-3 Same as AMI BIOS 2 beeps. Replace the motherboard.
1-3-4 The motherboard is bad.
1-4-1 The motherboard is bad.
1-4-2 Some of your memory is bad.
2-_-_ Any combination of beeps after two means that some of your memory is bad, and unless you want to get real technical, you should probably have the guys in the lab coats test the memory for you. Take your computer to the shop.
3-1-_ One of the chips on your motherboard is broken. You'll likely need to get another board.
3-2-4 Same as AMI BIOS 6 beeps: keyboard controller failure.
3-3-4 Your computer can't find the video card. Is it there? If so, try swapping it with another one and see if it works.
3-4-_ Your video card isn't working. You'll need to replace it.
4-2-1 There's a bad chip on the motherboard. You need to buy another board.
4-2-2 First, check the keyboard for problems. If there are none, you have a bad motherboard.
4-2-3 See 4-2-2.
4-2-4 One of the cards is bad. Try taking out the cards one by one to isolate the culprit. Replace the bad one. The last possibility is to buy another motherboard.
4-3-1 Replace the motherboard.
4-3-2 See 4-3-1
4-3-3 See 4-3-1
4-3-4 Time of day clock failure. Try running the setup program that comes with the computer, and check the date and time. If that doesn't work, replace the battery. If that doesn't work, replace the power supply. You may have to replace the motherboard, but that is rare.
4-4-1 Your serial ports are acting up. Reseat or replace the I/O card. If the I/O is on the motherboard itself, disable it with a jumper (consult your manual to know which one) and then add an I/O card.
4-4-2 See 4-4-1
4-4-3 Your math coprocessor is malfunctioning. Run a test program to double-check it. If it is indeed bad, disable or replace it. Disabling is fine, because you probably don't need it anyway.

Checking your manual, it apear to be award BIOS.
but then some thing rang a bell about Mll chip. http://216.122.85.218/html/docs/mii/mi_abv.pdf
this 300 chip came out in two versions both called Mll 300
chip 1
255MHz (Mll 300 ) 75/225 = 3X clock multi
chip 2
233MHz (Mll 300 ) 66/233 = 3.5X clock multi
make sure which one you have, I've had problems with Cyrix before, when clock speed is not right.
let us know which CPU .
also if you ae useing edo/fast page try swopping sticks around ie one in simm 0 to simm 1 and one in simm 1 to simm 0

Had any luck yet.

This might be a longshot, but it could just be that the bios is wierded out. Reset the bios (check for the jumpers to do that in the manual), then make sure the settings in there are good. Check to see if Primary video is set to the right type (PCI, AGP, whatever your video card is).

Motherboards are shipped with the CMOS jumper in the clear position, at least those kinds, and will not work until you seitch it over. Also the board has onboard video I'm guessing? If it does, Ram has to be placed in the 1st slot to enable the video, or there is a jumper somewhere. If nothing has worked so far, Unplug everything but power to mobo, power and ribbon cable to HD, and take out all cards but a video, if there is one. Chances are you could have missed a pin on a ribbon cable connection, it will give you a blank screen forever until its fixed

How about.. unplug everthing from MB. all cards, com port,PS2, IDE & floppy Cables and LEDs/reset/turbo wires to front of chassis. Since PS is ATX, you will have to leave Power switch attached. SO BE CAREFULL!!!
With only videocard, ram ,cpu and power connection in MB nothing else.
In addition remove all power connectors to Drives... Will system POST then??
If not, maybe MB is shorting on case so remove MB and set up on work bench with board out of case.. And see if it boots then. The "Turbo" switch on front of old case got me
(for awhile anyway)recently http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif...
You probably have checked your MB board jumpers about a Trillion times so i wont ask. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Ram voltage jumper correct (JP2)?
tried disabling onboard sound (install JP10)?
Is JP6 A-F set correct (core voltage)?
And JP9 (Core type-split/single)?
Note manual says DIMMS are only allowed in 1-2 only. SIMMs can be in 1-4.. And SD well you know where to stick emm.. lol
oops asked anyway.hehe
Unlike in SoCalgals case, my edits are due a interface problem somewhere between my chair and the keyboard and NOT within the keyboard itself! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
