here is my tale of woe. i have an amd 1400 thunderbird with 3 hard drives.
primary master 40 gig (20 gig primary as win98)
primary slave 40 gig was win xp pro
secondary slave 40 was another win98se install (primary partition 2 gig)

dual boot between win98 (c drive) and xp pro (f drive) worked flawlessly.

to boot to the 2nd install of 98 (the one i NEED, i would go into bios and change the boot order)

win98 setups are fat 32
xp is ntfs

all worked fine but i hardly ever used the win98 that worked from the xp boot menu

i saved all files (hidden and system ) of the root of the c: (the one i weanted to remove)

i removed that drive and put the second win98 install to the primary master. (now having just a 2 drive machine)

when it started it would only boot to win98. i then copied
ntloader, ntdetect, boot.ini and bootsect.dos to the new "c" drive

ran recovery console and did a fixboot and fixmbr

system boots with monu now for xp
win98 gives me an invalid system disk error

any help on correcting this issue?

put simply how do i create a dual boot system that has xp on the 2nd phyical drive and 98 on the first if all the mbr and boot info got lost?

thanks in advance

jim

Reinstall Win98 first then install XP second.

You hosed the system so bad now I doubt the effort to repair it would be worth it.

Chances are you need to edit the Boot.ini to include W98 . See the Repair section for W98 at :

Repairing Win98 may be impossible depending on what he did and in what order. It also depends on what files he deleted and what he copied from one drive to another.

1st off
i can restore the win98 image of the drive i am now using

that image does not have the dual boot though
it was made before xp was installed

so the question is this

what needs to be done to get the boot loader right when

xp exists on a drive other that "C"

thanks rocket !!!

excellent site / info

i had to remake the bootsect.dos file.. the drives were different enough for that to be the problem

all is fine and working again. i am off to ghost the win98 partition now to avoid futere issues.

your the man !
