Anybody have problems defragging a RAID 0 volume? Every time I try to defrag I get a read/write error message pop up about half way through. Then the system locks up and crashes trying to load windoze. I've replaced the disks with new ones and same thing. Even does it on a swapped out mobo. Got all of the latest drivers etc.
Mobo: P5W DH Deluxe
Drives: Maxtor 200 g SATAII
XP Pro, Intel RAID drivers.

Are you Overclocking?
Which defrag are you using? windows, diskeeper, other?
Any info from the event logs?

No oc during system work. Windows and Diskeeper. Can't get to the event logs. Full crash when the error is thrown. Can't even safe boot.
It seems to basically destroy my array. After I'm forced to hard-reboot, I get a disk error in the POST process from the Intel disk manager.

Just out of curiosity...why are you using Raid 0?

Which volume is your paging file located? Amuse me....eliminate it (it will prompt you that it needs a reboot), and try it without. Any changes? Are you using indexing, compression or have DEP turned on? Why the intel raid drivers and not the drivers that come with the maxtor hdd? And, per BD, why are you in raid 0 in the 1st place?

Well for the Raid 0, I will throw my 2 cents worth in if you are doing it for gaming.... you are wasting your time,. the only difference is going to be when you start the game...it will load the game to the memory faster on startup. but it will not make the game run faster once started.

I actually have 2 RAID 0's on this system. Reason being is I do a lot of video work for hobby and for elementary school teachers (my wife included). There are several programs that are popular with the teachers, such as Magic School Bus, Animal World PBS specials etc. I capture the programs and then edit them for time/commercials/ etc. then burn to DVD (all legit, we/I do have permission). As I do have my regular day job, and I do not get paid to do this, and I usually have a couple of hours of video to work with each day, anything I can do to speed up the process helps.
The editing/rendering/burn programs I use, Sony Vegas and Adobe Elements do a lot of read/write of the files. As I capture uncompressed in AVI format, an hour of video can be 50 or 60 gig's in size. To speed things up, I capture to the larger RAID that does not have the system or program files on it, D drive. Then when I do the work, Adobe needs to conform, read and write the files to a temporary file, this is the other RAID.
I have tried several capture devices that do have either software or hardware encoding, I currently have the ATI Theater 650 Pro in my system. It's good, but still using uncompressed video renders a better output.
Shore, on the system drive. The last time I tried to defrag, the same thing happened and I had the page file on the other drive. Also, no, no and no. The mobo is a Asus P5W DH Deluxe with the Intel chipset is why I need the Intel drivers.
This only happens if I defrag. The only other time I had a problem was when the power went out while the drive was I/O. Lost the stripe then too. Got a $400 UPS to prevent that from happening again.

try a different defragger!

Power Defragmenter (http://www.excessive-software.tk/) along with Contig (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Contig.html) works wonders here.
