Not wanting to abuse the boards for my own personal gain or anything, but i have an academic situation arising that some here may be able to help me with.

Basically, im currently looking for employers who are willing to take me on a work experience placement at the end of this academic year as part of my current degree (if i dont undertake a year in industry, i dont get my Honours basically). My degree course is BSc Computing (Networks) Hons.

If anyone knows of anywhere where i can go and find out who is offering placement years to undergraduates, directories of placements etc, or even knows of anyone looking take people on, please let me know, because the university's employment unit is leaving a lot to be desired at present.

If any further details are required, please drop me a PM

Cheers

Do you have anything like >>> http://www.monster.com/ in the UK?

How about>>> http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=united+kingdom+job+listings

Yeah, i've managed to pull a few out already which im going to enquire about.

We do have a UK version of Monster, but IMO i think its a bit of a headache to use - its just too big for its own good.

It's just an on going enquiry for the time being really, im trying to find as many as possible that sound interesting before applying, dont want to end up in some tiny
little firm in the back end of nowhere

Cheers

Do any of the companies over there hold " Job Fairs"?

Tend to do them through the univerisities, been to oen or two, theyr ento bad. The problem is that theyre organised by the faculty (my faculty covers comuting, sciences, engineering and arts) so you tend to find that only a small percentage of the companies in attendance are looking for people on your course (especially true for us Networking students, we seem to get a lot less in terms of appropriate placements from the Uni than say programming or games students)

Usually the universities put a lot of effort into helping their students find placements

I decided to not go for the placement year, in Scotland to do a placement year it takes 5 years. But you get a undergraduate masters for that.

I will see if I can find anything in any of my internship fair books I have for you. Does it have to be specific to networking?

It doesnt specifically have to be in the Networking field. The only thing is the way the course learning material is geared is more or less exclusively towards networking applciations.

For instance, the only language we've been taught is Java, the reason being so we can make Java applets and Net based programs. Similary all the Unix and Linux stuff we do is geared towards server administration.

As such, i couldnt really go for a general programing/computer sciency job because i dont know anything of real substance about C++ etc. (thats sort of the problem i have with the way the Uni is sorting placements, theres no specialist networking ones coming up just general "Computing" jobs which are find for the guys on software engineering and games, but us boys on Networks dont have some of the pre-requisite knowledge)

Cheers mate, being well into my third of five years i'd say you'vemade the right choice re: placements too

The way I looked at it is that when all my mates doing the 5 years with a placement year finish their placement I will have graduated and hopefully have a job with a company I've done a summer placement with!

I dont intend to work in computing once my degree's done anyways (At least not immediatley anyways) - much to the confusion of my tutors. Basically the only reason im doign the placement is to get the Honours component, i could of course just do a years additional study to pick up the Hons, but i wouldnt get a monthly wage for 12Months doign it that way.

And everyone else.

I will PM you with some boring carp later about some sources for placements etc.

In all honesty though your degree is so darn specific. If I where you though I'd look at some local firms....or smaller companies. Yellow pages per chance? Phone them and if they want any keen students....don't forget to mention you moderate at sysopt ;)

So is an honours Bsc in England 5 years? 4 years in jockland!

Nah, its still four years down here, i just had an aborted forray into the field of History and Politics beforehand.

TBH I havent got much interest in computing left these days - my aim at the end of Uni is to go into something football related - even if only on a casual basis at first, travel about and kicking a ball about to pay my way. For this reason i was dead against doing a placement but the Uni have sort of forced my hand (i suppose it looks bad on them if i dont take one), at the moment im trying to pursue some "Football related" IT avenues off my own back, but im looking for more traditional Computing stuff as well as a fall back.

Cheers
