if what you are planning to do is to prevent it from starting, you cand do it at msconfig etc.

go to the system in your control panel. in device options choose creative ensoniq audioPCI. go to the settings and uncheck "add mixer icon to taskbar"

thats it.

Been checking the home system for things I can eliminate from start-up to keep the ole task list clear and I've hit a snag I haven't been able to solve.

There is a sound card file called "starter.exe" that just won't stop loading.

It causes an icon to appear in the tool bar for the sound card's mixing screen. I've used this thing once in the past and don't want it loading.

It's not in the start-up file and I've cleaned it out of my registry 3 times now - every single reference I can find, and , like the energizer bunny on tri-lithium crystals, the damned thing starts again each time.

Of course, try to rename the file and it says it's in use.

My next step is to go into safe mode and try re-naming it there.

Anyone else see this?

Sound card is a Creative Labs 16 bit Ensoniq sound blaster card.

I've noticed that, without the file in the task list, I get fewer errors and SETI runs longer without problems, so I typically go in and turn "starter" off as a matter of course.

If the safe mode rename doesn't work, I might actually have to contact creative labs - what a novel idea -

Also, it doesn't show up in add/remove - no luck there....

Never seen such a stubborn little file.....

My SB PCI128 also has that file, but I do need it, since it is the only way I can enalbe Spatial, Reverb and/or Chorus effects for midi and other stuff.

Well you can go into the "Device Manager" and on the list look for your card... inside its preferences you can hide it, but not disable it. It is most likely that the program is called by some DLL file used by the cards drivers.

I think you are correct - if I didn't suspect it of causing a few conflicts on my home system, I really wouldn't care.....

I'll check with CREATIVE and see what I can do.

I believe I remember something about it being a selected item in the driver load ( slept since then - http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif- was at least a year ago - maybe two. )
