I have a Pentium Socket 4 board that has full SCSI support however, I added a second SCSI HDD to the chain and it does not show up anywhere. Doesn't seem to affect performance any but I would like to have the extra storage space that it would provide. Do I have to change the jumpers on the HDD and if so, how do I find out which of the two sets located on it to change? And where do I find Adaptec drivers? Machine runs fine but the Device Manager displays "!" on my SCSI Driver line.

Your second HDD not showing up could be because of several things. Most likely, it has been installed on the line after a device that already is providing termination to the SCSI bus. Could also be an ID conflict though.

Each device on your SCSI chain has to have a unique SCSI ID. Keep in mind that the SCSI controller also has to have an individual ID. I am assuming that your SCSI controller (since its on a socket 4 board) is at best a SCSI II, and so you will be limited to a total of 7 SCSI devices total. The last device on the SCSI chain has to provide termination to the SCSI bus.....sort of like telling the controller that its the end of the line and no devices are connected further down the chain.

So, what I would check, is to make sure that each SCSI device you connect has a seperate SCSI ID (0-7), and that the LAST device connected on the cable is providing termination for the SCSI bus.

To determine what jumpers on the HDD do what, you will most likely have to visit the manufacturers web site and see if they provide any sort of diagram. Some HDD's also have that info printed on the drive, but I am assuming if you didn't already see it there, you will have to look on the web.

Adaptec device drivers can easily be found on their web site as well. Here is the URL
http://www.adaptec.com/

You might be better served though by getting the latest SCSI driver from your motherboard manufacturer as I am under the impression that its integrated into the mobo.

After you get all of the devices recognized and functioning, you may still need to run FDISK to create partitions on the SCSI HDD's and then format them.

Hope this helped. ~Target

RSA - nifty name -

What does the device manager say when you pull up the details on the "!"

Target most likely resolved the issue with the volume written http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif, but just in case - give us the error message.

In my Device Manager it says, "! PCI SCSI Bus Controller." When I click on "Properties" I get the following: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device click "Reinstall Drivers." The BIOS for this system is; Pheonix BIOS (TM) for Pentium (TM) CPU-EISA Version 1.00-M5PE-T44.
This is a 1993 IBM PC Server model. The unit works but I have to reinstall the modem everytime I turn the machine back on and periodically, the script goes kaflooey! And, how do I get the smiley face etc. in the text?
