Zacko10000 12-18-1999, 06:21 PM Accelerator, I haven't heard that word for a while, the new age of graphics cards has made accelerator cards obsolete http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. The really popular one for a while was 3dfx Voodoo2, but now that has given way to 2D/3D chipsets such as the Voodoo3 (3dfx), TNT2 (Nvidia), Rage (ATI), and Savage 4 (S3). If you really want it to support glide, you need to go with a 3dfx card (Glide is old news though, it's not really going anywhere). Voodoo3 cards are nice, I personally have a VD3 2000. If that is too expensive try the Velocity 100 (I think that's what its called, it's the number I'm not sure about). It too is by 3dfx, they had a review of it over at www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com) a while back. They called it "a Voodoo3 2000 with 8MBs of RAM," it is about $40-50. You might also be able to find a site (like buy.com) which has a 10-20 dollar coupon out there and get it even cheaper. Zach Stan 12-19-1999, 05:25 AM Hi I've just installed my new Matrox G400 MAX... hum... nice... a bit expensive but it's worth it ! Stan Axel 12-20-1999, 10:17 AM I'd have to agree with Zack - just put in that card to replace an old S3Virge 4 MB card and I'm happy with the Voodoo card. Tried Matrox, didn't like their older stuff -- the software was bad, but their newer stuff appears to be better. Your card choice should reflect more of what you will use it for. Gaming and CAD designing have different requirements. For me - it's gaming at the moment. SownReality 12-20-1999, 01:22 PM I am running a Voodoo 3 3000, and I am very happy with it... Consider me a 3dfx man..... BBA 12-20-1999, 01:32 PM G400Max is sweet, but I need better gaming myself. My TNT2U is stressed with Quake3Arena (at 800x600 even) but I hear the DDR GE-Force really handles it well. I think the VooDoo5 will be one of the better ones when it debuts, maybe the Glaze 3D will come out around the same time, as it is supposed to have better performance than the V5 6500. I still have my V2 SLI cards installed just for the few gfames I have that look best in Glide (that means any game with the Unreal engine), but most games look best in OpenGL. Just my 2 cents!
