When I deleted partion and formatted. It showed 504MG.The drive I have is 853.I went to cmos and set for auto.At boot up it shows 853Mb but in fdisk it shows 504.Whats wrong?

Have you got LBA enabled in BIOS. if it is quite old PC it will need that to read drive fully.

Who made the drive? - Was it a Western Digital and did you ever use EZ formating software on it?? - You may need to get a special format or uninstaller to get that EZ stuff off of there.

A low level format might work, but just as easily might make the drive un-usable as well.

Also, specifying the cylinders and other parameters manually in the CMOS settings might do the trick. If the drive itself doesn't have all the specs needed for a "user" defined drive setting printed on the label, the manufacturer's web site might have them.
