What kind of RAID board are you running? What OS?
you should make a backup no matter what.
You should be able to add a mirror, but it depends on what you have. when in doubt, RTM.

As far as I remember, there is no way to install RAID without reinstalling Windows. If you are not running a small business, then there is absolutely NO REASON to use RAID at home. Onboard software RAID mirroring is prone to frequent "mirror breaking" which really, really slows down the boot up process when it has to recreate the mirror over, and over again. It can take hours for a large drive mirror to be created or synced.
What you should do is use a program such as Norton Ghost to make a fully bootable backup drive to drive copy on a weekly basis. Then when disaster strikes, you can move the drives around and be operational in minutes.
You do backup don't you?
RAID is unnecessary for a Desktop machine.
Data lose and recovery is also a real problem when it occurs.
Keep using RAID and you will find out.
My advice is to have a primary HDD and clone weekly using Acronis True Image, which also images RAID storage subsystems and that will do the job.
SCSI is still the way to go for performance and the only storage subsystem I use.
